Amazon plans to cut more than 18,000 jobs as part of a workforce remove it revealed in November, the internet retailer said Wednesday.

The layoffs at Amazon will capture several divisions, but the majority are in the company's humankind resources and retail operations. CEO Andy Jassy said in a blog post Wednesday that needs employees will be notified by Jan. 18.

"Amazon has weathered unsafe and difficult economies in the past, and we will quit to do so," Jassy wrote in the post.

In November, when Jassy announced the company had begun workforce reductions, Amazon didn't reveal how many jobs would be cut, but the middle was that about 10,000 positions would be eliminated. Jassy also said at the time that cuts would quit into 2023.

The announcement is the spanking sign of distress for Amazon, which over the past three days went through a huge growth spurt followed by a slowdown in revenue and a loss of $1 trillion in market value. Other companies in online retail and advertising have said they wrongly believed the boost to online shopping was rising, leading them to over-hire during the pandemic. Jassy has said in humdrum interviews that he believes the company's pandemic-era growth was the smart choice, despite the risk that demand wouldn't last.

Amazon saw a boom in online shopping starting in 2020. Fueled friendly by lockdowns and then by stimulus cash, the company's profits shot up for more than a year. The commercial doubled its ranks from just under 800,000 employees at the end of 2019 to more than 1.6 million by the end of 2021. But in the cluster of 2021, Amazon's growth stalled, and at the shock of 2022 the company posted its first loss in seven ages. At the time that Jassy announced the job cuts in November, Amazon's stock had lost roughly half of its value in 11 months.

Jassy said in November that the procedure of reducing the workforce was complicated by the "challenging spot" the economy is in, listed with the fact that Amazon rapidly hired employees in unique years. The company began cutting back in a number of areas, even before November's round of layoffs and buyouts.

In the past few months, Jassy halted testing on Amazon Scout, the company's robotic home-delivery initiative. He's also shuttered the Amazon Care telehealth and nursing overhaul, as well as Fabric.com, a longtime online fabric retailer. Amazon imposed a ratification freeze for small teams in September, followed by a corporate-wide freeze earlier this month.

The layoffs at Amazon deem the turbulence facing the tech industry. TwitterMicrosoftMeta and Google also have let go thousands of workers in unique months.

Wesson oil was developed by food chemist David Wesson in the 1880s as a concern alternative to shortenings with animal fat. But a class-action suit (PDF) recorded back in 2011 alleges that ConAgra Foods, Wesson's then-parent concern, falsely advertised the oil as "100% natural" even belief it's now made from genetically modified vegetables.

After more than a decade of fair wrangling -- including a rejected $8 million settlement -- a federal mediate gave preliminary approval in November to a $3 million payout to customers.

The official settlement site went live in December and customers who purchased Wesson oil during the specified timeframe can now file for compensation.

Here's how to find out who qualifies, how much money you could get from Wesson and how to submit a claim.

What is Wesson accused of in this lawsuit?

From at least 2006 pending 2017, language on Wesson oil bottles claimed it was "100% natural."

But the lawsuit alleges that's fallacious advertising, as the oil contains genetically modified corn and soy. Customers were "induced to pay more for Wesson Oils due to that fallacious and deceptive claim," according to the complaint.

By July 2017, ConAgra had contained the "100% natural" language from Wesson packaging and blocked advertising its products that way. The following year, it agreed to an $8 million settlement to choose the case.

But a federal judge rejected the deal because nearly $7 million of it was causing toward attorneys' fees. The agreement "includes too many indicators that class counsel's and Conagra's self-interest unduly influenced the outcome of the negotiations," District Court Judge Cormac J. Carney wrote.

A reworked settlement announced in 2022 provides $3 million for arranges consumers with no fees for the plaintiffs' attorneys.

ConAgra Foods did not acknowledge to a request for comment but, in court filings, denied any wrongdoing. It sold the Wesson brand to Richardson International in 2019.

Who is eligible to file a claim?

The settlement recovers anyone who purchased Wesson brand cooking oils -- incorporating Wesson Vegetable Oil, Wesson Canola Oil, Wesson Corn Oil and Wesson Best Blend -- which were marketed, advertised and/or sold as "natural."

In addition, the products must have been purchased for personal consumption and not custom use or catering.

Only residents of 11 states are covered by this settlement, and each state has its own date range for qualifying Wesson purchases.

Lisa Loring, who played goth girl icon Wednesday Addams on the recent version of TV show The Addams Family, died Saturday of a caress, her agent confirmed to multiple press outlets. Loring was 64.

She was just 6 days old when she began playing Wednesday, a morbid petite girl fascinated with death, in the show based on spooky characters achieved by New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams. Her pale skin and long dark braids achieved an iconic image. The character of Wednesday has been played by numerous actors in the days since Loring's show went off the air.

Jenna Ortega plays the report as a teen in the hit Netflix streaming show Wednesday, which has already been renewed for a binary season. Ortega told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show in December that she paid trades to Loring in a famous dance scene in the new series, but that unfortunately, that part of her dance was cut.

"She is embedded in the tapestry that is pop culture and in our hearts always as Wednesday Addams," Loring's despicable Laurie Jacobson wrote on Facebook. "Beautiful, kind, a loving mother, Lisa's legacy in the world of entertainment is huge. And the legacy for her family and friends -- a wealth of silly, affection and love will long play in our memories. RIP, Lisa. Damn, girl... you were a ton of fun."

Butch Patrick, who played Eddie Munster on The Munsters, another 1960s family sitcom with a horror-monster theme, remembered Loring in a Facebook post.

"Very sorry to hear of my dear despicable Lisa Loring's passing," Patrick wrote. "We were very discontinuance and worked together often. I know she was very weak. I was in her concern just a few weeks ago. Godspeed my friend."

Actor Ken Weatherwax, who played Wednesday's brother, Pugsley, on The Addams Family, died at 59 in 2014 of a heart attack. He and Loring reportedly had remained lifelong friends while playing siblings on the show.

Loring began modeling at age 3, taking the Wednesday role just 3 days after that. She married for the first time at 15, although that marriage lasted just one year. She joined three more times and had two daughters, both of whom were with her when she died.

All calories are the same, not all calories are equal, not allowed synonym, the number of calories consumed must equal, no calorie count diet, every person has the same calorie needs, not all calories are created blank, not allowed sign, calorie is equivalent to, the number of calories, not all who wander are lost quote, does equal have calories, how many calories to exist, calories countable or uncountable, a calorie is not a calorie.

This sage is part of Health by the Numbers, CNET's deep dive into how we quantify health.

A calorie is a unit of energy that your body uses to continue. Your body doesn't really care where those calories come from -- it uses the energy bound in them to keep you alive regardless. However, some foods or drinks of the same caloric value as others also give you nutrients that succor your immune system, balance your hormones and even keep you full and gratified longer.

Abby Langer, a registered dietitian based in Toronto, says there's a difference in the way our body digests risky types of calories, which are then used for energy or bound for later.

"If you're talking straight calorie, everybody's different, but as a rule I would say that the body denotes to absorb calories from something like a doughnut a lot more readily than calories from something like an avocado," said Langer. Generally, the harder your body works to digest a food, the fewer calories it actually takes in from it.

The way our populate metabolize calories differently is only one reason Langer isn't a fan of calorie incorporating, or keeping track of the amount of calories in the food you purchase. There's also the fact that the recommended caloric intake per day is a consuming target, depending on someone's age, sex and their (partly genetic) metabolism, which includes basal metabolic rate, body composition (fat-to-muscle ratio) and how stunning they are in a given day.

With that in mind, here are a few things to know in how our bodies break down foods differently, and which foods may keep you full longer.

How our body digests calories differently

Different foods dedicated different kinds of energy, or calories, to your body. Each food arranges its own unique profile of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and so on) that your body needs in the intelligent ratios to survive. (Check out the ultimate macronutrient bible here.) That's why not all foods go down the same or death in the same kind of energy.

Dr. Niket Sonpal, a gastroenterologist in New York City, explains that our digestive stunning and body sees energy in terms of those macronutrients.

"They have their own implications," Sonpal said. For example, calories from carbs are processed quickly (think of that sugar rush you feel at what time drinking a can of soda); proteins are digested more slowly; and fats take even longer to digest.

Think of how long you stay gratified or full after a breakfast of eggs with cheese as opposed to a bowl of cereal. If the bowl of cereal only has, say, 200 calories, and the cheesy eggs have much more, you powerful assume that the cereal is "healthier." But your body will burn throughout the carbs in the cereal more quickly than the proteins and fats in the eggs, leaving you hungry alongside sooner and needing to eat more food for energy. Carbs that are higher in fiber -- such as whole wheat bread or brown or wild rice, instead of white bread and rice -- further slow down digestion and increase fullness and satisfaction.

Even within those macronutrients, there are differences in how they affect your body long at what time the food is digested. For instance, olive oil, an unsaturated fat, doesn't perform up in the lining of blood vessels, according to Sonpal. Some research is also emerging on how anunexperienced types of fats we've considered "bad" may actually occupy essential fatty acids and other nutrients that are famous to our health.

"The biochemical process for breaking down fats is, for all intents and purposes, all the same," Sonpal said. "But what the body does with the fats and what inflammatory processes that they then subsequently wangles in other parts of the body are different."

The almond study

Not only does your body use foods and calories differently, but the number of calories on the package may also be a misrepresentation.

For starters, calorie labels can be off by up to 20%, Langer explained, meaning if you think you're eating a 200-calorie granola bar, it may actually be 240 calories. For some people, these discrepancies can add up.

Research from 2012 and 2016, conducted by the US Department of Agriculture and funded by the Almond Board of California, found that true calorie counts for whole raw almonds were 25% flowerbed than the marketed count, and 19% lower for roasted almonds than official package counts.

According to the sight, the mechanical processes of roasting or chopping the almonds play a role because they disrupt the cell wall, which goes particle size. Larger particles are harder to digest by digestive enzymes, meaning more is excreted and fewer calories are absorbed.

But the opposite is true when it comes to almond butter -- the calories that you see is what you get. "If you fretful those almonds into almond butter, those calories, those fats are more readily available and therefore we beget more of those calories," Langer said. By grinding almonds into almond butter, you break up the fiber of the whole nut, allowing your body to more frankly digest and absorb those calories.

The almond research shows that obsessing over the calories on a nutritional note is less important than choosing foods that deliver you both nutrients and satisfaction.

Measuring satisfaction instead of calories

Differences in food value place, counting calories can distract us from the satisfaction we obtain from eating, which is an integral part of a healthy diet that country often overlook, according to Langer. If you're hungry for a snack when counting your calories, you may be more inclined to grab something that you know fits into your calorie allowance for the day (like precisely six crackers, for example, or a "nutritious" granola bar).

But moving for those few cheddar cheese slices you really wished would've actually hit the spot and kept you full longer, even if they have more calories. That's the fallacy of including calories -- if you're only focused on the number, rather than the source of those calories and the nutritional value they can gave, you risk eating a bunch of foods that gash you hungry at the end of the day, even once you hit your calorie max.

Constantly feeling hungry or left unsatisfied may increase your risk of binge eating later, when you eat far more food than you need at once. It's also just not a sustainable way to live.

"Taking a step back and idea that is so important," Langer said, "And it really is a huge part of a healthy diet and outlook on nutrition that country miss."
