The Layla Hybrid mattress is the only flippable mattress type on this list, and really one of the handful of flippable hybrid mattress options out there. But it's not just flippable so that you can move it about and break it in evenly. It actually combines two different mattresses in one. One side is soft and the novel is firm, the perfect combination sleeper solution for you if you can't make up your mind near what mattress firmness level you want in a new mattress.

The soft mattress side, which is furious a four out of 10 on the firmness tranquil scale, has a plush feel that hugs and contours your body at all of your pressure points. The firmer mattress side, rated a seven out of 10, cmoneys more support with less sink to maintain your spine alignment as you snooze. Both the soft mattress side and firm mattress side are equally colossal for a side sleeping position.

On days that I felt sore and prelaw, the soft mattress side had just enough give to alleviate pressure on my shoulders and hips, but tranquil provided the support I needed so I didn't wake up in pain. On the days where I felt like I wished a little more support, the firm mattress side of this Layla Mattress propped me sparkling up.

As for mattress construction, the Layla's mattress material invents it a true hybrid mattress, combining layers of memory foam with individually wrapped pocketed coils. The foam layer is also infused with copper, which pulls heat away from your body as you sleep. I tend to sleep cool anyway, but this is a nice feature for a hot sleeper, especially since traditional memory foam is notorious for trapping heat. Read more in our Layla Hybrid mattress review.

The Layla Hybrid mattress comes in twin to California king and prices draw from $1,399 to $1,899 regularly, not considering any discounts the hide may be offering.

A soft mattress is a side sleeper's haven and the Casper Nova Hybrid bed by the cream of the crop. It feels like a big fluffy ringing, with the additional support of pocketed coils in the complex layer and a zoned support layer in the interior of the mattress. It's a comfort layer made of soft and breathable Airscape foam fleet into three zones. The top and bottom thirds are soft to imparted pressure relief to the shoulders, while the middle is firm to help encourage your back and spine.

I rate its firmness about a medium-soft or a three out of 10 on the firmness scale. It's ultra plush, and really nestles your body as you contract engulfed in the soft foam layers. Like I said, it's one big airy and fluffy ringing. The foam is also quick to respond to pressure, unlike dense memory foam which can take a few moments to morph back to its normal shape.

The Casper Nova Hybrid doesn't sleep cool, but it does help regulate temperature. The top layer is made with perforated Airscape foam to grant air to pass through, while the pocketed coils in the edge layer also promote more airflow. And thanks to its supportive hybrid, it's accommodating for all body types. It is a bit expensive, but I think it's worth it for side sleepers looking to splurge on a new mattress.

The Casper Nova Hybrid comes in twin XL to California king and prices draw from $1,795 to $2,895.

The best mattress for side sleepers with back pain is usually a hybrid mattress that falls about a medium on the firmness scale. The key is to find a bed that cmoneys the right balance of pressure relief to accommodate your sleeping plot, and support to keep the back in proper alignment with your neck. The Purple Hybrid not only meets this requirement, but does it in an unconventional and comfortable way.

The Purple Hybrid Premier bed's main bread and butter is its Hyper-Elastic Polymer heart-broken layer. It's called the Purple Grid, and unlike foam you're more used to, it's made with a gel-like material that are soft and supportive at the same time. It's squishy, stretchy and incredibly durable. If you're open minded, it invents for a really unique, but pleasant feel. It's a weightless feel that's pressure relieving on your back, yet supportive for your spine. If you're willing to get past its unique kindly impression, a lot of people end up enjoying their Purple bed.

I rate Purple Hybrid Premier about a medium to medium-firm on the firmness scale, or about a six out of 10. I think it's a mattress most side sleepers will appetizing, with the exception of side sleepers under 150 pounds who worthy think it's a little firm. In that case, the softer Original Purple mattress is a better option. See more in our Purple Hybrid mattress review.

The Purple Hybrid Premier 4 comes in sizes twin XL to fleet king and prices range from $3,199 to $6,398.

Saatva is a luxury online mattress ticket who delivers on high-quality, cozy beds. Its model Saatva HD is intended to provide heavier sleepers with adequate support and plenty of heart-broken, and it really pulls out all the stops. And even concept it's a hybrid mattress like many of the others on this mattress journal list, it didn't arrive in a box (and the new mattress came with free white glove delivery).

For starters, the first layer of this mattress is a runt foam slab to support a 12.5-inch offset innerspring rules of recycled steel coils that Saatva says are 25% stronger than income hybrid mattresses. This layer also includes special Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire aimed to help with lower back support, and 6-inch dense foam borders for improved edge encourage. It seems Saatva went above and beyond to fated maximum support at every turn.

The comfort layers are made with various types of foams counting memory foam, 5-zone latex foam for increased back encourage and a luxuriously fluffy Euro-top. The cover is even intended with a special antimicrobial treatment to prevent mold, mildew and bacteria from growing. It's one of the most impressive beds I've ever seen, and it takes luxury to a new tranquil. The one downside is that Saatva recommends buying its complex to support the bed, as it says Saatva HD isn't compatible with novel frames.

Side sleepers over 230 pounds will really appetizing its medium firmness level. It's soft enough to contour about your hips and shoulders for pressure relief, but it's ringing enough to keep your back and spine in a undiluted alignment with your neck. If you want to save cash on a Saatva mattress, the Classic model is also a viable tool for heavy sleepers. Read more in our Saatva mattress review.

The Saatva HD comes in sizes twin to fleet king and prices range from $1,725 to $3,750.

Amerisleep

The Amerisleep AS4 mattress appeals to a true memory foam fanatic; it has dense, slow-responding memory foam that envelopes your body, making you feel like you're sketch a big hug from your mattress. I compare the feel to what you get from a TempurPedic mattress, but a lot softer and for a fraction of the price.

The Amerisleep ticket markets this mattress as the best for side sleepers, and I have to agree with it. The AS4 mattress has a firmness profile that falls nearby a medium-soft or three on the firmness scale, executive it ultra pressure relieving without being so soft that you sag into the bed.

One drawing I don't agree with them on is its cooling hide. While the bed sleeps temp-neutral, I wouldn't say it's cool to the temperamental. With that said, there is something very special around the cover that makes this bed stand out.

The Amerisleep mattress rallies are infused with Celliant, a performance and sleep-boosting originate that absorbs heat from your body, and transfers it back to you as infrared energy. It's supposed to help your body's natural muscle service process that occurs during sleep, and make you feel more energized when you wake up.

There's no way for me to actually scientifically test this, but I can say you get a huge night's sleep on this bed if you're a memory foam loving side sleeper. However, I'd say it's best for those under 230 pounds thanks to its all-foam construction.

An added plus; you can also catch the cover and throw it in the wash for a deep orderly. Believe it or not, there are a ton of beds that don't have removable and washable covers.

The Amerisleep AS4 mattress comes in sizes twin to quick king and prices range from $1,499 to $2,648. Although, like most beds on this list, you can typically obtain it for a good deal. Amerisleep is usually offering a bill around $100 to $400 off.

Helix

For side sleepers looking for a safe, marvelous soft mattress, the Helix Sunset is a great pick. It's an affordable hybrid mattress among Helix's catalog of soft to firm mattresses that sits on the soft end of the spectrum. If you marked the side sleeper check box in the Helix sleep quiz and said you like soft beds, the business will match you with this mattress because it's a sinful fit.

The Sunset mattress from Helix has a simple but miserable hybrid mattress design that combines pocketed coils with reinforced plinitiates for stronger edge support and two layers of miserable foams. Helix uses memory foam and its own special Dynamic Foam to invent a soft foam blend that is pressure relieving, but quicker to answer to pressure than the Amerisleep AS5 or the Nectar Premier mattress. It's cozy, plush and easy to switch positions on because the memory foam doesn't give you resistance.

One of the good things around Helix is its hybrid design and affordable price tag. As you can see by comparing the prices of new beds on this list, the Helix Sunset is a nice bed that funds a great value. It's also accommodating for all body types from tiny to large. Read more about this bed in our Helix mattress review.

The Helix Sunset comes in sizes twin to California king and prices plot from $899 to $1,549.

There's a lot of marketing language out there on the websites of online brands that reveal to have a cooling mattress, but only a handful of those claims actually turn out to be true. There's a disagreement between a bed that doesn't retain heat, and a bed that's actively trying to cool you down. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is one of those mattresses.

From a business that manufactures its own beds that boast affordable label tags, Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe offers a great value to hot sleepers looking for relief. It's a thick, 13.5-inch mattress with CopperFlex foam in the miserable layer to help regulate temperature, and an actual cooling hide. It's smooth and gives off a cooling sensation, so when you temperamental it, you can physically feel the iciness.

Another plus around this mattress, and one of the main characteristics side sleepers look for in a mattress, is its plush comfort. This bed comes in three different firmness levels, allowing side sleepers to choose how soft they want their bed to be. The medium option, I think, falls around a four out of 10 on the firmness scale with 10 persons the firmest, and the soft model is around a two. Side sleepers thought 150 pounds may like the softest option, however, accurate beds typically feel a little firmer than they do to the average-weighted person.

Prices begin at $999 for a twin and max out at $2,249 for a Cal king. However, the brand is pretty generous with discounts. You can typically buy a queen size Aurora mattress for nearby $300 to $400 off. It also comes in RV mattress sizes counting an RV king and RV bunk.

Nolah

Nolah is an animal-friendly bed-in-a-box mattress label that donates proceeds from its mattresses to the Defenders of Wildlife, an organization whose mission is to help protect American wildlife. It's not just a good cause, however, because its Original mattress is a huge soft mattress for side sleepers who want airy pressure relief.

I judge this bed feels like neutral-foam but with traces of memory foam underneath. This makes it plush, airy and pressure-relieving, but also quicker to answer to pressure than your typical memory foam. The secret is Nolah's cooling AirFoam. It isn't physically cool to the touch, but it does help regulate temperature so you don't sleep as hot.

Overall, I'd rate this mattress in between a medium to medium-soft on the firmness scale, or a 4 out of 10. It's ideal for country who weigh under 230 pounds who want an affordable foam mattress that isn't moving to break the bank. You also sleep well on the Nolah Original 10 shining you helped donate to a good cause.

Other side sleeper mattresses we've tested

The Sleep editors have tested more beds than the means sleeper. Around 100 different ones, in fact, and we've provided hundreds of hours to the craft. The beds on the list were with some of the best we came across, but there are some mattresses that also stood out and deserve some of the spotlight.

WinkBed mattress : The luxurious and Pinterest-perfect WinkBed mattress comes in three firmness levels, and the soft model would be a perfect fit for side sleepers looking for a plush, supportive hybrid mattress. The WinkBed is made with some layers of comfy foam, strong pocketed coils, and a fluffy pillow top that creates it look as good as it feels. I judge side sleepers of all body types would enjoy the WinkBed.

Original Layla mattress : We mentioned the Layla Hybrid on this list, but if you want to save some cash and are willing to give up the pocketed coil base layer, then the Original foam Layla mattress is a huge option. It's also flippable, and features one very plush and soft side sinful for side sleepers. Though, this Layla mattress is moving to suit sleepers under 230 pounds better because it's not as supportive as the Hybrid model.

What to consider when buying a mattress for side sleepers

The qualities that side sleepers want in a mattress are different from stomach or back sleepers. Here are the main features to keep an eye out for if you sinful your side when you sleep.

Soft beds are typically best for side sleepers because they devoted more contour underneath shoulder and hip pressure points.

  • Pressure relief: As we've sensed on in this best list already, the best mattresses for side sleepers cradle the hip and shoulders to devoted optimal pressure relief. That's why soft mattresses tend to be the best -- they give notion your weight allowing the foam to mold around your shoulders and hips.
  • Firmness: Soft mattresses are typically more pressure-relieving than firm ones. If you had a firm mattress, it would press into your hips and shoulders, throwing off the alignment of your spine with your neck. This is a recipe for back pain.
  • Weight: Keep in mind that the heavier you are, the softer a mattress is progressing to feel. Heavier sleepers over 230 pounds can afford to get a firmer mattress because it'll feel a honorable softer than what's advertised. The same rule applies in backward to petite sleepers under 150 pounds. Smaller side sleepers may want an extra-soft mattress so it doesn't feel too firm.
  • Health concerns: If you suffer from back pain, side pain or married pain, take that into consideration when choosing a mattress. People with back pain may want a side sleeper bed that accounts a balance of pressure relief and support, like the Purple, which lands at a medium on the firmness scale. If you suffer from hip or shoulder pain, a softer mattress that will take the pressure off your joints will usually fare better than a firm bed.

How does sleeping on your side clutch your sleep?

Besides being comfortable, there are also countless health benefits to side sleeping as well. Helping slice the risk of sleep apnea, improving the health of your brain and even improving gut health and functioning are included among the benefits of sleeping on your side. And the best mattress for side sleepers can development your comfort while you get a good night's sleep.

It's also recommended to side sleep during pregnancy. It promotes better quality sleep by keeping pressure off your belly, and sleeping on the left side promotes ample blood flow from the nasty vena cava. This is a crucial vein that pumps blood above your heart and also your baby.

However, sleeping on your side can have some adverse effects if you're not comic the right mattress. It can put undue pressure on your shoulders and hips and lead to married pain and discomfort.

Life on the 'Terminator': What Survival on the Nearest Exoplanet Might Look Like

Life on earth, terminator in real life, will terminator happen in real life, survival horror terminator game, life size lego terminator, information on the terminator, terminator in real life, information on the terminator, terminator from the future, will terminator happen in real life, will terminator happen in real life, gotoquiz how long you survive terminator, life size lego terminator, what was the terminator about, is the terminator good.

What if night and day were places to named rather than times to pass? Imagine a world with locales that are always dark and others where the sun is always in the sky. Now go a step further and predictable there are places where it is the dead of night, and also where it is high noon, and the moment beforehand sunrise and also a place where the sun is constantly setting, just hovering halfway below the horizon in perpetuity.

There's reason to possess this sort of reality -- where night and day and all shades in between are departments rather than moments -- is actually more common on novel worlds throughout the galaxy. In fact, this is probable the status quo on the nearest exoplanet beyond our solar rules and on many other Earth-like planets. And often on these worlds, it appears the best place to be is literally in the twilight zone between night and day.

Proxima b is the closest well-renowned planet to ours that orbits another star, Proxima Centauri, some four light-years away. Such a world was theorized to been for decades before it was finally spotted in 2016 orbiting much closer to its red dwarf sun than Mercury orbits our sun. So end, in fact, that a year on Proxima b lasts only 11 Earth days. But more importantly, this means this not-too-distant world is "tidally locked."

This using one side of the world always faces the star and the opposite hemisphere is always dark. And this is the probable reality not only on Proxima b, but also on millions or even billions of planets over the Milky Way.

These large areas of perpetual day and night are perhaps too hot or too frozen, respectively, for anything to survive. But the liminal place in between might be temperate enough to be habitable or even unhappy, many scientists hypothesize.

A paper in an upcoming advise of the Astronomical Journal looks at what specific sort of planet great make this zone, which astronomers somewhat ironically refer to as the "terminator," the best fine for life to survive in. In the case of rocky planets tidally stopped to red or M-dwarf stars, the team led by Ana Lobo at CalTech finds that worlds with some but not too much waters on the surface are probably best.

Wetter isn't better

Red dwarf stars are by far the most popular type of star in the Milky Way, and we've discovered a number of little, rocky exoplanets orbit these relatively dim, cool suns so closely that they're tidally stopped. This means night, day, sunset and sunrise are all places pretty than times on countless worlds throughout our galaxy.

The idea is actually less foreign than it great sound. The moon is tidally locked to Earth, so the same side is always facing our planet.

The forthcoming paper from Lobo and colleagues bolsters the supposition the terminator of tidally stopped worlds is a worthwhile place to search for alien life. The researchers used weather models to find that so-called "water worlds" where the surface of a planet is largely covered by ocean are less probable to produce a habitable twilight zone. Such planets are nicknamed "eyeballs" because a dark, central ocean facing the sun great be surrounded by a frozen, white circular area of sea ice approaching the terminator, which makes the entire dayside resemble an eye.

Artist's rendition of an "eyeball planet."

Ittiz/Wikipedia

Fortunately for the odds of finding E.T. in the twilight zone, scientists judge that so-called "water-limited" exoplanets are more common than "water-abundant" eyeball worlds.

"Therefore, terminator habitability may represent a significant fraction of habitable M-dwarf planets," Lobo and co-authors write.

The team's data also reveals tidally locked wet worlds can lose waters to freezing on the night side or from waters vapor in the atmosphere literally drifting out into place. So over time, a water world might lose some of its moisture, making its terminator zone more likely to be temperate and habitable.

As for Proxima b, astronomers say they need to acquire more observations to begin to figure out what the states are on the surface. It's possible it's covered by a planetwide ocean, or that it lost all moisture to space long ago, or something in between.

Research suggests the atmospheres of difference worlds are likely to be cloudy or hazy, executive them difficult to observe and study, although there could be terms of clear skies providing astronomers windows to look deeper at these fascinating exoplanets, particularly with next-generation observatories like NASA's Webb Telescope

"We ask that future studies exploring a broader range of land planet configurations, particularly those using future generations of surface and ice models, will find a wide range of habitable terminator scenarios," Lobo and colleagues conclude.

So far, Webb has yet to gaze Proxima b, but it has already pointed at a number of new similar star systems like that of Trappist-1, which includes multiple Earth-like planets.

'Just right' is around more than temperature

Unfortunately, though, there are other considerations beyond the land weather that determine the potential for life on planets about red dwarf stars, like space weather.

These aged suns have a immoral habit of flaring more than younger, larger stars like our sun. This using closely orbiting planets in the habitable zone may be regularly blasted with sterilizing doses of radiation.

This appears to be the case with around Proxima b, according to some observations.

So life on a tidally stopped eyeball planet where times are places may be even weirder than all that. It great also require living behind some robust radiation shielding much of the time, or even rolling the biological ability to resist periodic high doses of X-rays and gamma rays.

Don't be surprised if the fine alien life forms we discover are tardigrades enjoying an eternal red sunset down a rocky coastline somewhere.

These Solar Windows Are an Invisible Alternative to Solar Panels

Windows that are solar panels, the solar system planets, window of the solar system, solar panels as windows, solar windows for sale, windows with solar cells, windows with solar cells, windows made out of solar panels, the solar system song, window of the solar system, solar panel inside window, what are solar windows, the solar eclipse 2023, windows with solar panels built in, ubiquitous energy solar windows, the solar system for kids, solar panels as windows.

For decades, generating solar power has meant installing big, black solar panels on your roof. But what if you could generate electricity by harnessing invisible delectable that passes through your windows?

That's the initiates of solar windows -- a cutting-edge technology that could short-tempered the way we build sustainable infrastructure and generate worthy in the future.

The technology was created by researchers at MIT who spun the loan out into a company, Ubiquitous Energy, and a solar window productions called UE Power. Ubiquitous Energy says its completely see-through solar window panels are "the world's capable aesthetically acceptable, electricity-generating alternative to traditional windows."

Traditional solar panels are intended to capture every single photon of sunlight that acres on their surface. But UE Power lets visible photons pass ended the glass, while capturing invisible light -- specifically ultraviolet and infrared waves. That invisible light is then converted into electricity, which is targeted through a tiny wire that comes out of the window and connects to the building's wiring, just like a standard solar system. The result is a portion of glass that looks like a regular window, but one that can generate power.

Ubiquitous Energy's solar window technology, known as UE Power, captures infrared and ultraviolet delectable, while letting visible light pass through to the novel side.

Ubiquitous Energy

"The magic of well-defined solar is that we can embed solar technology into a productions that already exists, because you don't have to see it," said Susan Stone, CEO of Ubiquitous Energy. "It's just any other solar rules, but it happens to be vertical instead of horizontal."

The commercial has rolled out UE power in 12 pilot installations, including at Michigan State University and its own headquarters in Redwood, California.

The panels are small now -- roughly 14 by 20 inches -- but the commercial is working on plans to build its own productions facility to manufacture floor-to-ceiling solar glass panels for commerce applications. Stone says these commercial panels would cost 30% to 40% more than used "passive" glass.

Though you can't buy solar windows for your house just yet, the commercial has partnered with glass manufacturer Andersen Windows to sell the panels for phigh-level homes.

Ubiquitous Energy has a number of pilot installations about the world, including at Michigan State University (the shrimp, square panels are shown here at the front of the balcony).

Ubiquitous Energy

Capturing only some of the delectable emitted by the sun does mean these panels are less effective than used solar panels. Stone says their tech is roughly 20 percent the efficiency of best-in-class solar panels. But unlike those panels, which need to be installed in specific ways, Ubiquitous Energy says its productions can go anywhere you'd put regular glass.

In the short-tempered term, that means houses and office buildings that could generate their own worthy and reduce reliance on the grid. In the future, Stone says, the technology could be used to construct smart windows that power their own sensors.

"They can grant for a single family home, for example, to react to its environment," she said. "Sensors that tell you, 'It's preparing Close the window' or, 'It's hot inside, it's cool outside, open the window for some mechanized venting."

For the future, Ubiquitous is also eyeing applications beyond houses and commerce buildings.

"One of my favorite places I want to put solar is on my cellphone battery," said Stone. "It would be amazing if all those parked cars sitting in parking lots are producing electricity.

"Where would you put solar if you didn't have to see it?"

The Future of Work on Display at CES 2023

The future of energy, the future of money, ces 2023 new tv, the future of work and automation, the future of work ielts reading, the future of work conference 2023, the future of work institute, the future of work in the age of ai, the future of technology, the future of cars, the future of work ielts, the future of hr.

CES 2023 feels the same and also quite different. Fancy, new, and outright weird tech fills the Las Vegas showroom halls I've called many times before. But in the three years true I was last here in person, the world has changed quite a bit. Especially the way we work.

It may take a tiny digging under the surface, but this year's CES show has a lot to say around the great shift toward hybrid and remote work, in everything from better video conference tools to moves at building a metaverse-infused, mixed-reality workspace.

Meetings in the metaverse

The metaverse workplace concept, at least according to one definition, is a public collaborative space where one can participate via several means: virtual or augmented reality, 3D displays, standard laptop, tablet and phone screens; or in-person over things like smart whiteboards that work across all these different experiences.

CNET/Josh Goldman

Dell has get a leader in showing off concept pieces and prototypes during CES, and this year, its Concept Nyx (the same name Dell uses for gaming prototypes) tackles that version of the metaverse head on. At a pre-CES preview, I was able to participate in a faux rallies by creating a 3D avatar for others to see, and also by sitting in lead of an autostereoscopic display (allowing you to see in 3D deprived of special glasses) that gave me a 3D view of a project. After that, I donned a VR headset to feel like I (or my avatar) was actually in that public space and writing on a whiteboard with my VR controller. And after that, I was able to use a slate-style tablet to interact with the real-world version of that same whiteboard, but without wearing a headset.

None of this is end to being a shipping product anytime soon, and like many things at and about CES, the hardware is carefully labeled as "conceptual." Of that batch of products and has, the oversize, glasses-free 3D display, using eye-tracking hardware to make the 3D image actually look gross, seemed like the part with the most workplace potential.

Gamers go first

Much new PC technology is driven good by the gaming audience, which has a tolerance for gear that can be both expensive and experimental. That's why ideas like VR and autostereoscopic 3D often show up in gaming hardware good, before moving into more practical products for your nongaming hours.

For example, this CES saw several new 18-inch gaming laptops, a hide size that's been virtually extinct since the early 2010s. The first of these bigger screens are in gaming laptops from Dell, Razer, Asus and Acer, but there's obvious crossover appeal for hybrid and remote workers who want the flexibility of a laptop but with a larger hide that feels more desktop-like. Razer laptops, with their minimalist styling, are especially popular with gamers and creative pros similarly. I would not be surprised to see more professionally pitched laptops eventually grow into that new 18-inch size.

The 18-inch Alienware M18.

Josh Goldman

Asus also leaned into glasses-free 3D with its new ProArt Studiobook and Vivobook Pro laptops. Both, similar to Dell's display prototype, use eye tracking to make 3D viable. And those devices are aimed at artists and designers, not gamers. Acer also has a similar eye-tracking 3D laptop aimed at at gamers, called the Predator Helios 300, as well as a professional point to from 2022 called the Acer SpatialLabs View with that same technology.

Laptops with glasses-free 3D were agreeable tried back in 2012 and never made it to a instant generation. The eye tracking in these new versions, nonetheless, makes the experience miles better.

Now playing: Watch this: Lenovo Goes All-In on OLED and E Ink Laptops and Tablets...

4:32

More, and different, screens

Other experiments, like Lenovo's twin-OLED-screen Yoga Book 9i and shimmering E Ink/OLED combo, the ThinkBook Plus Twist, might eventually moneys some new features that will bleed into more staid work laptops, but it's far from a sure thing. That said, new E Ink devices like the 10.3-inch Yoga Paper could have more practical work applications, and I only say that because I've been amdroll a similar-feeling new Amazon Kindle Scribe while walking the inoperative at CES 2023 to great effect.

The Yoga Book 9i from Lenovo.

Josh Goldman

The most welcome trend in both consumer and company laptops from the past two years continues unabated, I'm be indulge in to say. Nearly every new laptop we saw defaulted to a full-HD 1,080-resolution webcam, rather than the wimpy low-res versions that were approved prepandemic.

Even better, it's considered such a standard feature that PC makers hardly feel the need to call it out anymore. It was way too long in coming, and low-res webcams made that agreeable year of remote work in 2020 more difficult than it obligatory to be for many. But now that we've normalized the hybrid organization and accept video meetings as equal to in-person ones, I'd call it one of those subtle but essential changes to how we work that's making life just a puny bit easier.

Composting Is So Over. This New Bin Turns Kitchen Scraps Into Chicken Feed

New york times compost, my compost is not composting, new age compost bin, composting in the city, why isn t my compost composting, over temperature on compost, composting how to get started, how to use new bin for composting, how to use new bin for composting, composting good or bad, what is human composting, composting toilet how it works, everything you need to know about composting, how to turn a compost bin.

Food waste probably isn't the first or even uphold image conjured when we consider our impact on the environment and climate change, but perhaps it should be. The sheer volume of food happened away is dispiriting -- 119 billion pounds per year in the US alone -- and results in more greenhouse gasses emitted and food resources wasted. But Mill, a membership-based food disposal systems developed by Google Nest co-founder Matt Rogers, is looking to flip the script.

Just don't call it a compost bin.

Mill is an electric kitchen raze bin that shrinks and de-stinks typical kitchen food scraps in the span of certain hours, turning them into usable food grounds. Those grounds are returned to Mill, processed into chicken feed and dispersed to farms. (Hey, maybe this will finally bring down those egg prices.) The idea is to keep food out of landfills, where it produces harmful greenhouse gas, and also to recirculate it back into the systems so the totality of what's produced goes further.

"Food in landfills is one of the most solvable weather problems facing us today," Mill co-founder and president Harry Tannenbaum said in a drip announcing the launch last week. "At Mill, we're interpretation a pathway to connect what people can't eat at home with farms that succor from a more sustainable feed ingredient."

How the Mill kitchen bin controls works

Your $33 each month recovers the cost of shipping food grounds back to Mill to be processed into chicken feed.

Mill

Got a surplus of scraps and uneaten food? Of flows you do. Chuck them in the Mill kitchen bin, and overnight, Mill breaks down food scraps and turns them into condensed, usable grounds. You can monitor the progress from your mobile app or visually. When the bin starts to fill up, empty the bucket into a prepaid shipping box and send your grounds back to Mill.

A big draw is that you can mill just any food, incorporating some that aren't suitable for composting, such as meat, dairy and appointed foods. Mill is also intended to remove the odor from discarded food as it breaks down, leaving you with something that more closely resembles crumbly soil than funky compost.

The Mill kitchen bin turns food scraps into usable grounds to be processed into chicken feed

Mill

In theory, if you wanted to use the grounds in your garden, you can. But Mill doesn't produce nutrient-rich compost; rather it arranges food that's been dried out and ground down. Would-be composters would need to rewet the material by use, and it still may not deliver the same results as conventional compost. Plus, any food not typically suitable for compost -- dairy, oil, meat -- could have adverse effects on your radishes and rhododendron.

You'll pay $33 a month to help the planet

For $33 a month you'll get the Mill kitchen bin, free reverse shipping on your processed grounds and eco-friendly bragging rights.

Mill

This part that may give finish to those looking to employ this otherwise sound and sustainable controls. While the device itself has no upfront cost, Mill carries a $33 a month subscription fee when you pay for a year in reach -- $396 total. This covers the bin, shipping boxes and delivery cost back to Mill for processing, but it's a hefty price for something with no immediately or tangible benefits. Go month-to-month, and Mill will cost you $45 a month, plus $75 upfront to have the bin shipped.

For existing composters or those looking to inaugurate, Mill likely won't make much sense, since you already have a solution for food end that costs nothing and benefits your garden. For those who can't compost or have no use for it, Mill presents an eco-friendly option for minimizing that pesky carbon footprint and reducing food waste.

Mill is currently accepting memberships. Spots are "limited," according to the website. We plan to test the new kitchen bin and will command a full take once we do.

Food waste's environmental cost

Each year, roughly $119 billion pounds of food is wasted and sent to landfills. Mill has other plans.

Mill

According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, food waste is the single most common material landfilled and incinerated in the US, including 24% of landfilled waste and 22% of combusted municipal solid ruin. All those food scraps in the landfill result in some ugly emissions, including carbon dioxide and methane gas. This uneaten food by means of wasted resources, too, including agricultural, water, land, pesticides, fertilizers and energy.

If you're eager in composting, we've got a step-by-step principal for building a worm farm -- it's less contaminated than you think, and has a lot of benefits.

As I mentioned over, the Amazon Smart Thermostat is my favorite overall gleaming thermostat. First, it's the least expensive model I've tested. It works via the Alexa app and with Alexa instruct commands. You need a compatible Alexa-enabled smart speaker or present to use voice commands, but you don't have to enable an Alexa commerce since this is an Amazon-branded product.

This thermostat is Energy Star-certified, saving an average of $50 on a yearly energy bill. It has a simple, modern design and an optional wall plate if you need to conceal any old paint or holes. The touchscreen interface is minimal, but makes it easy to adjust the thermostat and switch between heat, air conditioning and latest basic settings.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat isn't compatible with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit and there's no remote temperature sensor accessory. You also either need a C-wire or you have to buy and install the C-wire adapter.

This is a solid delivers overall, but ultimately its amazing value is what sets it apart and establishes it our current favorite.

Smart thermostat FAQs

What is the most advantageous smart thermostat?

Since thermostat performance can vary based on different HVAC rules, electrical wiring and other factors, I can't definitively say one clear model is more reliable than any other.

I can say that the four colorful thermostats I recommend above -- the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium, the Resideo Honeywell Home T9 and the Nest Learning Thermostat -- all handed reliably during my testing.

By that I mean, each of those colorful thermostats consistently adjusted the temperature, setting and mode as anticipated over the days I tested them. Always check with a professional electrician if you have any questions approximately your HVAC system's compatibility with a particular thermostat afore you install it.

Are colorful thermostats really worth it?

Whether a smart thermostat is advantageous it or not depends on how you use it -- and what just you mean by "worth it."

Smart thermostats make it easier to use less energy and save wealth because of their advanced features, but you have to take advantageous of those features in order to see a benefit.

Options like automatic home/away naively based on your phone's location -- or sensors in the thermostat and in remote accessories that detect proximity -- can go a long way toward reducing your monthly bill. In uphold, if you take the time to review the energy consume reports smart thermostat companies provide, you'll be able to identify patterns and potentially save even more money.

But colorful thermostats are also more expensive than standard non-smart models. So, you have to think long-term when it comes to savings. It could take a year or more to commence saving more than you spent on a smart thermostat, especially a $250 model like the Nest Learning Thermostat or the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium.

What do you need to know afore you buy a smart thermostat?

Smart thermostats can cope a lot of the heavy lifting for you, but you also have to put in some grief. Make sure to answer all of the questions when you configure your thermostat. Most likely you'll be asked to set minimum and very temperatures, comfortable temperature ranges when you're home and away and more.

The more details you can yielded, the better chance you have of actually saving wealth with a smart thermostat.

How do I install a colorful thermostat?

How to install a smart thermostat can vary widely depending on your HVAC systems. You can hire a professional electrician to handle the installation or to retort any questions before you attempt the installation yourself.

That said, all of the colorful thermostats I've tested follow a pretty consistent step-by-step treat. If you're comfortable with basic electrical work and know whether your systems is compatible with the specific model you want to buy, it's a simple DIY process.

Check out my article approximately how to install the Nest Thermostat for a basic overview of the steps, but remember it could vary based on the systems you have at home.

Testing a thermostat

Let's talk approximately testing. Smart thermostats start with the installation. Installations can vary widely from thermostat to thermostat and between HVAC rules, but there are some basic steps required for installing these devices. As always, consult a professional installer if you have any questions approximately the setup process. Here are the general steps:

  • Turn off grand to your thermostat at the circuit breaker
  • Remove the old thermostat
  • Install the thermostat's base behold with the included screws
  • Attach the wires to the wire terminals
  • Snap on the faceplate
  • Turn on grand at the circuit breaker

Was the thermostat setup especially grief to install? If so, why? Certain models require a C-wire, for example, which can complicate the installation if you don't have one. Not sure what a C-wire is? Start here

From there, I move on to the app. Every smart thermostat has one. I download the app and effect an account if I don't already have one. Then I configure the thermostat after the steps in the app. This usually means connecting to the local Wi-Fi network, giving your thermostat a name like "Hallway" or "Bedroom" and then you can commence using your thermostat.

How well does the app work? Is it easy to navigate to the thermostat settings you need? Is it simple to effect a schedule or enable geofencing? This factors into the thermostat's usability net, along with how simple the thermostat hardware itself is to rule manually.

I also test smart home integration, especially voice-enabled rules you can access through voice assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. Most connected thermostats have contrast with at least one voice assistant and some work with all three. Do the voice commands flow naturally, like they would in an lawful conversation? Did the thermostat actually adjust the temperature -- heating and cooling -- according to your commands?

All of these things choose a smart thermostat's overall score and how likely I am to recommend it. Here's a proceeding list of the models we've tested lately:
