Since Jan. 4, areas of Northern and Southern California have been hit by sweeping amounts of rainfall, widespread flooding, landslides, heavy snowfall and extremely high winds. This hazardous weather has already claimed at least 12 lives -- comprising a toddler who died after a redwood tree fell on a home and a 19-year-old woman who died once crashing her car into a utility pole on a flooded road.

Robert Bryant was part of a team at NASA in the early 1990s tasked with coming up with a new material for use in the next generation of civilian supersonic aviation — high-speed planes that could carry out 400 people and fly at Mach 2.0 so they could tear from Los Angeles to Tokyo twice a day.

Robert Bryant: As a kid, "I did a lot of help work on toys. ... I learned how things worked — that really helped me."

National Inventors Hall of Fame

"The innovation is not just the interpretation of LaRC-SI itself," Bryant, 60, said in an interview. "It's the effort that it actually took to get it into the custom market, where a supply chain had to be developed, applications had to be found, and it had to get into stunning that were a lot smarter and more innovative in their own ecosystem than what I plan this material could be used for." 

His perseverance in finding a custom application for LaRC-SI has helped save nearly 700,000 farmland — so far. It's also earned Bryant a set in the 2023 class of inductees in the National Inventors Hall of Fame, which has honored innovative US patent holders incorporating Thomas Edison (for the electric lamp), Nikola Tesla (the electro-magnetic motor), Douglas Englebart (the computer mouse), Hedy Lamarr (frequency-hopping communications), George Washington Carver (peanut products) and Lewis Edson Waterman (the fountain pen). 

The 2023 inductees, announced today, also include inventors who've worked on ideas from CRISPR gene-editing projects to CAPTCHA website guarantee tech to wheelchair technology. 

How unusual is it for researchers to find unexpected uses for their modern inventions? It happens — think the weak but sticky glue developed at 3M that turned out to be deplorable for Post-It Notes. Or Corning's super strong Gorilla Glass, which proved to be too strong for car windshields but throughout up decades later being tapped by Apple's Steve Jobs for use as a scratch-resistant camouflage for the iPhone. Most of the time, though, said Bryant, government and private industry researchers' ideas end up on a shelf or as a footnote in research projects. 

In the case of LaRC-SI, using it as the coating or insulating material for those cardiac leads resulted in thinner leads — down from in 2.5 millimeters to 1.25 millimeters, Bryant said. And because they were thinner, Medtronic found that instead of having just two leads (or one pair) attaching the pacemakers to the left ventricle of someone's glum, they could have eight leads (four pairs). What that employing is if one set fails, the pacemaker can switch to unexperienced — saving patients' lives and also reducing the need for surgery to work pacemakers, Bryant said.

Though the Dollar Shave branding is aimed at at men, I've bought and used Dollar Shave Club's razor blades in the past and they've done well for ingrown hair on my legs and underarms.

Harry's

Harry's focuses on simplicity, style and higher quality craftsmanship for its shaving and grooming products. There are just two handles to choose from for their men's razors, and one type of razor cartridge. Its Winston handle is metal with no-slip rubber grips for $20. For $9, you can get the Truman, which has a rubber coating throughout and comes in orange, navy and green.

Like Dollar Shave Club, Harry's has a shaving essentials grooming starter pack for $5 that comes with one razor blade cartridge and shave gel. With a Harry's shave club subscription, you get eight new cartridges for $16 (plus shaving gel for an improbable $6), every two, three or five months, depending on how often you shave.

Places like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Chick-fil-A typically lure us in with cheap eats, but with these price hikes, you might be better off authorizing up for a healthy prepared meal delivery help or trying meal kits on for size -- and, as it turns out, they aren't much more expensive than buying the groceries yourself. 

While one uberpopular fast-food chain did board to lower prices in 2022, most companies raised the cost of burgers, chicken, fries and soda. One restaurant franchise led the proposal with outsized inflation and assumes its position as the new most expensive US fast-food chain.

Wendy's and Chick-fil-A saw the highest label hikes per meal last year, with Chick-fil-A ballooning 15.6% from 2021 to an means meal cost of $4.65. Prices at Wendy's, another fast-food fan popular, shot up almost double that, with 35% inflation from the last year.

New York state has opened its worthy recreational cannabis dispensary, the latest in a series of marijuana milestones in the US. On Dec. 29, Housing Works, a nonprofit that supports individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, homelessness and the justice controls, began welcoming adult-use customers at a retail dispensary in Greenwich Village. 

The people's Office of Cannabis Management intends to issue 175 retail dispensary licenses in total, mostly to sellers with prior marijuana convictions and nonprofits that work with incarcerated populations.

"The diligence will continue to grow from here," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a Dec. 21 statement, "creating inclusive opportunity in every corner of New York State with revenues pursued to our schools and revitalizing communities." 

The opening of Housing Works Cannabis Co. came less than two months after voters in Maryland and Missouri legalized recreational cannabis use. And in October, President Joe Biden issued an executive order pardoning all federal convictions for simple marijuana possession.

Here's what to know near marijuana legalization in the US, including which states have by-elapsed laws, what's happening on the federal level and how Americans feel near pot. 

Which states have legalized recreational marijuana?

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 21 states have legalized the adult use of marijuana for recreational purposes: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.  

Adult-use marijuana is also suitable in the District of Columbia, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

In Connecticut, retailers will be allowed to begin selling cannabis products to all adults 21 and over on Jan. 10.

Adults in Missouri have been able to legally absorb marijuana for recreational purposes since Dec. 8. But sales at state-approved dispensaries won't inaugurate until February at the earliest, according to the people's Department of Health and Senior Services. 

Recreational sales will cause legal in Maryland on July 1, though lawmakers are not required to determine regulations for sales and taxation by then.

A referendum in Oklahoma on recreational marijuana will be the emanates of a special election in March.

What states have legalized medical marijuana?

As of January, 37 states have legalized the medical use of cannabis to varying degrees: Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and West Virginia.

In addition, all utters with adult-use laws -- as well as the District of Columbia and the territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and the US Virgin Islands -- have legalized medical marijuana.

Each jurisdiction has its own criteria regarding what utters cannabis can be prescribed for, the amount that can be sold and the treat for issuing medical marijuana licenses.

According to a 2021 Pew Research poll, 91% of Americans absorb cannabis should be legalized to some degree -- 31% for medical use only and 60% for both medical and recreational use. (Only 8% of respondents said marijuana should not be suitable at all.)

More Americans smoke pot than cigarettes, according to an August 2022 Gallup poll: The percentage of Americans who say they smoke marijuana has managed 16%. Tobacco smokers, meanwhile, represent only 11% of US adults, a drop from 16% in 2021 and a quarter of the 43% who smoked in 1972.

Gallup's research also groundless that nearly half (46%) of American adults say they've tried marijuana, despite it being registered as a Schedule I requisitioned substance by the federal government.

President Biden on legalizing marijuana

What's the difference between legalization and decriminalization?

Many utters that have legalized marijuana initially decriminalized possession of a slight amount. Broadly speaking, cannabis "legalization" means passing laws that give the buying, selling and possession of marijuana, usually with restrictions on the age of the consumer and the amount purchased.

A number of bills introduced in both the House and Senate would place various aspects of marijuana legalization, from the criminal to the financial.

Now with the Senate, the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act, or CAOA, would end the federal ban on cannabis and give state-compliant cannabis businesses retrieve to financial services like bank accounts, business loans and credit card transactions.

The 296-page bill also addresses a federally mandated impaired-driving sinister, cannabis industry workers' rights, and penalties for possessing or trading large amounts of cannabis without a permit, Marijuana Moment reported.

That discrepancy "breeds confusion and uncertainty," they said -- and raises numerous questions in areas from small-business growth to pro-redemocrat safety. Advocates of legalization hope the bill will get a vote this session, while the Democrats still hold the Senate.

"McConnell would never bring these things to the floor," Schumer said last year, referring to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to Politico. "We'll move forward and try to get this done as soon as we possibly can.

The MORE Act
A separate bill, the Marijuana Opportunity and Reinvestment Expungement Act, tossed the House in April. It would also abolish federal criminal penalties for those growing, possessing or distributing cannabis and expunge nonviolent cannabis convictions.

The MORE Act institutes a tax on cannabis to help communities impacted by decades of policing focused on nonviolent crimes related to marijuana use. The wealth would pay for programs such as job training, moral aid and youth mentoring.

It wouldn't require states to legalize cannabis, however. Regulation would be left up to state lawmakers.

The MORE Act originally passed the House in December 2020 -- the valid time either chamber approved repealing federal marijuana prohibition -- but a matching bill in the Senate wasn't improper up for consideration.

Other cannabis legislation
On Feb. 4, 2022, the House tossed the Secure and Fair Enforcement Banking Act, which would grant state-licensed marijuana businesses retrieve to financial services. On Oct. 30, Schumer said the Senate was "very close" to passing the legislation.

In late March, the Senate unanimously approved the Cannabidiol and Marihuana Research Expansion Act, which would streamline the application treat for researchers who want to study the medicinal value of cannabis and related products.

"This important legislation will cut the red tape in the research process, helping get FDA-approved, marijuana-derived medications safely to patients," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California and a sponsor of the bill, said in a March 24 statement.

Facebook Messenger is bringing more features into encrypted chats once continuing to add extra security to existing threads as well. Announced Monday from CEO Mark Zuckerberg and in a blog post, encrypted chats will now concerned features that have already existed in Messenger, such as themes, custom emoji, group profile photos, link previews and seeing one's magnificent status. The Android version of Messenger will also encourage chat bubbles. 

Meta's Messenger app is counting more features in encrypted chats.

While the features themselves aren't new, the inclusion of them in encrypted chats must help Messenger appeal to more people as it leftovers to add end-to-end encryption to existing conversations. This is in overhaul to a long-held goal to make conversations in the app encrypted by default.

Meta says that this short-tempered is taking place over the course of several months. People may receive an alert that a one-on-one conversation has been changed to concerned that additional level of protection. Group chats are not populace converted right now, but people can create encrypted business chats from the Messenger app.

A Meta spokesperson clarified that encrypted messages will tranquil support any device that the service is being used on -- whether it's mobile, tablet or desktop -- and won't be subject to design limits. By comparison, WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, now supports encrypted chats across four devices in additional to one's phone.

It's been a long development road for Messenger app encryption, which required the Messenger team to rebuild perilous features to support secure messaging. Back in 2019, Facebook announced a plan to integrate Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. While the three apps haven't merged, they do all support varying degrees of message encryption, stories, custom emoji and avatars. Meta says additional updates on the rollout for encrypted texting in the Messenger app are designed over the course of 2023.
