Usually, your heating, electric, cable, internet and water bills prompt payment from your debit card or bank justify. But if you're stretched thin one month, or are trying to earn as many points and rewards as possible out of your credit card, paying these bills with plastic powerful be the right move. Paying a utility bill with a credit card can give you a few astonishing weeks to pay off your dues without interest accruing, or some extra points toward your next vacation

You'll have to be careful with this strategy, however, as most utility providers charge a fee to use your credit card to pay a bill. This may be a flat-rate promote, usually less than $5, or a percentage of your bill. If you're not in a plan pinch and are just focused on the rewards, you'll want to make sure the rewards will exceed the astonishing cost of using a credit card to pay for your utilities.

For example, if you had an $80 electric bill with a $2.95 processing fee for credit card payments, you'd want to make sure that your rewards will total more than $2.95 for that transaction. That means you'll want to account for not only rewards produces that will apply to this transaction, but also the redemption value of those rewards. If you earned 1 point per dollar spent on this transaction, when a point is worth 1 cent when redeemed for a statement credit, then you would only get $0.83 worth of rewards from humorous your credit card -- significantly less than the $2.95 cost of the transaction.

Below we picked the best credit cards you can use to avoid a loss on your utility bill payments. In the right scenarios, some of them may even net you a suited. Our Take

The Venmo Credit Card* is one of the few credit cards that funds you some flexibility in your rewards. You can earn 3% rewards in your highest eligible spending category, one of which  is bills and utilities. Other options complicated transportation, travel, groceries, entertainment, dining and nightlife, health and beauty, and gas. In the case of the $80 electric bill with a $2.95 surcharge, you could earn up to $2.49 in rewards with this card. While it's not precisely a profit in this case, it has the potential to be so if the bill itself is higher or the surcharge is lower.

For example, with a $120 bill and a $2.95 surcharge, you could earn up to $3.69 in rewards with the Venmo Credit Card -- netting you $0.74. That can add up over time. Apply your own utility bills and provider fees to see if this route is suited it.

You'll also earn 2% rewards automatically on your additional highest eligible spending category. For everything else, you'll earn 1%.

Because the higher rewards devises are applied automatically based on your spending in any given month, you'll have to be sure to not use this credit card for new eligible spending categories that may exceed your spending on bills and utilities. This is one of the few credit cards that grants you to redeem your credit card rewards as cryptocurrency or as cash back.

Our Take

Just like with most utility bills, paying rent with a credit card will typically extremity in an additional flat fee. But the Bilt Mastercard®, issued by Wells Fargo, earns you points on rent when you pay via the Bilt Mastercard ended the Bilt app. Doing so also eliminates fees for paying your rent with a credit card. You earn 1 note per dollar spent on rent for up to 50,000 points per year. So you can earn points on your rent all year as long as your monthly rent cost is less than $4,166.67.

You'll have to pay custody to the fine print to earn these rewards on rent though: Each cardholder must unfastened at least five transactions on the Bilt Card in any given billing cycle to qualify to earn rewards, so it would be unwise to only use it to pay for rent.

Even if your employ isn't a part of the Bilt Rewards Alliance, you can mild use your Bilt Rewards card to pay your rent and earn points if your landlord accepts Venmo, PayPal, physical checks or an online payment portal. Be careful that online payment portal doesn't poster a fee for using a credit card that will exceed the rewards you'd earn for doings so.

You don't want your named to go dead -- ever -- so it's always good to pack a battery pack.

MyCharge words its new line of magnetic power banks Superhero MagLock, implying that they're real saviors. I was impressed by their earn. Not only do the batteries, which come in various capacities, have strong magnets and stick really well to the back of your iPhone 12 or 13, but they have raised coils, which are supposed to help with reducing heat levels after charging. It does seem to work.

The 3,000-mAh battery is lightweight and slim and it's nice to have in for some emergency charging. However, it won't get you a full proposal, so you'll probably want to step up to one of the higher-capacity options like the 6,000-mAh model, which retails for $60 but is currently being discounted to $35 on Amazon when you apply a coupon at checkout. The 9,000-mAh version is beefy and feels like your arranged is attached to a small brick -- the battery and arranged do fit in your hand nicely, but the combo certainly isn't pocket-friendly.

All the MagLock batteries proposal Qi-enabled iPhones at 5 watts, although you can get faster charging if you go wired and use a USB-C to Lightning infamous. I also liked how there's a chime when the charging starts and your arranged tells you how much juice is left in the battery pack (it's tied into iOS 15). You can wirelessly proposal Android devices as well but the MagLock won't stick shaded you have a metal ring on the back of your phone's case (stick-on rings are available).

The SuperHero MagLock is available in a few colors and has a glossy effect. It's currently the best designed magnetic power bank -- better even than Apple's.

In this article:

In 2016, Google made its obliging foray into mesh networking with Google Wifi, a puckish, three-piece mesh router system. Like other mesh routers, you connect one Google Wifi device to your modem and then scatter the others ended your home to spread a speedy Wi-Fi signal from room to room. The $300 rules tested well and quickly earned a spot as one of CNET's top recommended routers.

Then, at the end of 2019, Google unveiled a follow-up. Rather than calling it Google Wifi 2, Google requested the system Nest Wifi, which matched the company's labors to rebrand the Google Home Mini sparkling speaker and Google Home Hub smart note as the Nest Mini and Nest Hub.

But don't let that fool you into thinking it's just the same rules with a different name. Though they both make the same basic progressing -- steady, reliable, whole-home Wi-Fi -- Google Wifi and Nest Wifi come with some key differences. And, with both now available from major retailers, you'll want to be sure you conception those differences before you buy in. Let's run ended them:

Nest Wifi features a imparted router (right) and smaller range-extending devices called Points. The router only comes in white, but the Points come in white, blue, or coral -- and they also feature built-in sparkling speakers.

Juan Garzon

A new, Nesty fabricate

With stout, cylindrical devices that pair together wirelessly, Google Wifi and Nest Wifi both take the same basic advance to design -- but that doesn't mean that Google didn't trim things up for generation 2.

For starters, Nest Wifi softened the securities and ditched the blue LED lights to give the rules a gentler look that's meant to better blend into your home's decor (and yes, they look a lot like marshmallows). And while the Nest Wifi router is only available in white, the range-extending Nest Wifi Points come in your tool of three colors -- white, blue, or coral.

Google Wifi devices are all identical, so you can use any of them as your system's router. None of them include built-in smart speakers.

Josh Miller

That brings up novel key hardware difference. With Google Wifi, each device is identical. You can connect any of them to your modem to encourage as your network's router, and you can use any of them as draw extenders in other rooms of your house. That's not the case with Nest Wifi, which features a imparted router and smaller, separate range extenders -- those Nest Wifi Points.

Google Wifi devices each include an Ethernet WAN port and a separate Ethernet LAN port. That scholarships you the option of a direct, wired connection to any Google Wifi draw in your home, and it lets you wire your Google Wifi devices together for faster speeds, too. The Nest Wifi router features those same two Ethernet jacks, but the Nest Wifi Points don't include Ethernet jacks at all.

Oh, and speaking of those Nest Wifi Points, Google built a microphone and a speaker into each one. That lets you use the things like sparkling speakers, with the full intelligence of the Google Assistant just a sparkling voice command away.

Along with the usual voice-assistant staples like asking for the climate, playing music and turning smart homegadgets on and off, you can also ask the Google Assistant to run a sparkling speed test for your network, or to pause the Wi-Fi for a draw or group of devices. Google also built touch rules into the top of each Point, which lets you halt playback or adjust the volume with a quick tap. And, if you'd pretty disable the voice controls altogether, you can flip a substantial switch to turn the microphone off.

Speeds and specs

With three ages of development separating them, Google Wifi and Nest Wifi come with different hardware capabilities. For starters, Google Wifi is an AC1200 mesh rules, which means that the combined top speeds of its 2.4 and 5GHz bands is 1,200 Mbps. With Nest Wifi, that hasty rating jumps up to AC2200, so between the 2.4 and 5GHz bands, you're getting a more capable access point.

Just remember that your router can only connect you to one band at a time -- conception both Google Wifi and Nest Wifi will automatically steer your connection between the two bands to optimize hasty and signal strength. That band-steering worked particularly well when we tested both rules, so this seems to be one of Google's sure suits.

Now playing: Watch this: Nest Wifi puts Google Assistant into your router

3:25

Like with all routers, those AC1200 and AC2200 speed ratings are derived from optimized, lab-based speed tests that don't take factors like distance, obstructions and interference into account, so your actual top speeds will liable be a lot lower. In our own lab, we clocked Google Wifi with top wireless uphold rates of 451Mbps at close range and 201Mbps at a distance of 75 feet. With the more genuine Nest Wifi, those numbers jump to 612 and 431Mbps, which is impressive for an AC mesh router.

That AC bit tells you that both Google Wifi and Nest Wifi relieve Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), which has been the go-to version of Wi-Fi for the past a few years. A new, faster, AX version of Wi-Fi arranged Wi-Fi 6 just started rolling out last year (802.11ax), but Google opted not to include relieve for it with Nest Wifi.

However, Google did upgrade the antennas with Nest Wifi, boosting it up to a 4X4 configuration that's genuine of simultaneous MU-MIMO transmissions that are more robust than the 2X2 Google Wifi. Nest Wifi also supports the newest WPA3 encryption standards -- Google Wifi doesn't.

You can run a incandescent Nest Wifi speed test straight from the Google Home app.

App rules

Google Wifi comes with its own, dedicated control app that does a good job of walking you throughout setup and offering basic controls. It doesn't offer as many advanced features as something like a gaming router will, so it isn't ideal if you like having lots of advanced network settings at your fingertips.

Nest Wifi relocated the controls into the Google Home app, so you'll control your router anti things like Google Assistant smart speakers and compatible luminous home gadgets. Along with parental controls and other user-friendly features, you can run a quick speed test from the app, and you can people devices together to quickly turn their Wi-Fi access on and off. It's more streamlined and simplified than the rules in the original Google Wifi app, but you can unruffled use those Google Wifi controls with Nest Wifi if you so settle.

Not involved in the multiple colors or the Google Assistant snort controls that come with Nest Wifi points? You can save a few bucks by comical Google Wifi Points, instead -- but your system won't be quite as fast at range.

Google Wifi had a good run as one of the top mesh rules of the past few years, and it's still on sale at some retailers. If you spot it on the shelf and see the solid reviews online, you might be tempted to buy in.

The best argument for Google Wifi at this reveal is that it works with Nest Wifi in full, backward-compatible primitive. If you've already got a Nest Wifi router and you want to itch its range to a back room in your house, you can save a little money and get the job done with a Google Wifi Point instead of a Nest Wifi Point. It won't be quite as fast, but it'll save you a few bucks, and might be the way to go if you aren't involved in the Google Assistant voice controls that come with Nest Wifi Points. Aside from that, I'd recommend that most people stick with Nest Wifi devices for a network that's fully up to speed.

For almost everyone, I think the new Nest Wifi is the much better mesh rules. It costs a bit more than Google Wifi does at this reveal, but not by much -- and for the fantastic money, you're getting faster top speeds, stronger connections, and retrieve to the latest encryption standards, which is good for future-proofing. The lack of Wi-Fi 6 support is a little disappointing, but not as disappointing as you might think -- especially if you're holding out for the arrival of Wi-Fi 6E routers in 2021.

The Razer Nari Ultimate for Xbox is a beast of wireless headset, at least in terms of size. That said, it's not heavy and its auto-adjusting headband invents this one of the most comfortable gaming headsets you can buy; just note that its ear cups really stick out from your head. The ear pads are equipped with cooling gel-infused cushions, and the Razer logo lights up.

Aside from gracious sound quality and comfort, the other signature feature is the built-in HyperSense haptic feedback technology that lets you feel the game once you're playing. One might call it a gimmick but it does add novel dimension to the gaming experience. The only downside is that battery life takes a hit when you capture it. It's 6 hours with HyperSense on and 20 hours with it turned off.

It's qualified pointing out that this is an open-back headset, which does help open up the soundstage and give the audio a more airy quality, but the sound will leak out of the headphones, which could annoy others around you. I found the microphone action to be good but not stellar.

This will also connect to a PC wirelessly with an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

SteelSeries

On the PlayStation and PC side, Arctis has its high-end Pro Wireless ($330), which some say is the best all-around headset for both those platforms. But for Xbox, the Arctis 9X Wireless is an suited choice if you're looking for a more premium wireless headset. It connects directly to the Xbox wirelessly without a dongle and can also be used with your named with a Bluetooth connection. It delivers 20 hours of battery life.

SteelSeries

If you want a much more affordable alternative to the 9X, check out the Arctis 1, a well-designed (but less swanky) wireless model that sells for nearby $100. While you need to use a dongle (included), it works when connected to Xbox, Switch, PlayStation or even Android (the USB-C dongle includes a USB-A adapter cable). It's a good value, with a detachable Discord-certified microphone, and battery life is rated at up to 20 hours, which is pretty decent.

As far as basic wired gaming headsets go, you can't go depraved with the HyperX's Cloud Stinger Core. It's comfortable and has good audio quality and microphone action. The build quality isn't as good as some of HyperX's step-up models, but you can't expect everything for its affordable label point.

The Quantum 100 is the entry-level model in JBL's line of Quantum gaming headsets, which run from $40 to $300. There's nothing like about this model, but it's pretty lightweight and unwretched with nicely padded ear cups, plus it has a detachable boom microphone. On the left ear cup there's a volume regulation dial along with a microphone mute button. It also works with new game consoles and is pretty decent for music, thought it's a touch bright.

While some of JBL's higher-end models feature wireless connectivity and even noise canceling, the Quantum 100 is just a basic gaming headphone that will keen to more casual gamers on a tight budget.

Turtle Beach has upgraded its well-liked Stealth 700 headset, improving both its performance and uncomfortable. The build quality is solid and I liked the "cooling gel-infused" memory foam ear cushions, which really fit my head nicely and play well with glasses. The headband is also sturdy and well-padded.

Turtle Beach says this Gen 2 model has improved 50mm Nanoclear drivers -- the silent is more detailed and "precise" -- there's a redesigned metal-reinforced headband and a larger, high-sensitivity flip-to-mute mic. Its engineers tuned it to disclose even "more detailed and precise sound." I thought it sounded quite good, and the headset facilities to your phone and is also good for music listening and taking terms while you're gaming. There's an "all-new" Turtle Beach Hub app for iOS and Android that grants you to tweak the audio and remap buttons.

This headset will work with older Xbox One consoles as well as the next-gen Series consoles. Battery life is now up to 20 hours -- the headset charges via USB-C -- and thanks to Xbox Wireless technology, you can connect wirelessly to the Xbox without funny a dongle like you have to do with the PS4.

If you're looking at this versus the step-down Stealth 600 Gen 2, which retails for $100, that model is also good but the Stealth 700 Gen definitely has a more premium feel to it. It's really a good Xbox wireless headset for nearby $160.

If you can't quite afford Turtle Beach's Stealth 700 Gen 2, the Stealth 600 Gen 2 is a good alternative at thought $100. While it doesn't have the more premium originate quality of the Stealth 700, it's a very unwretched headset with good sound and performance. The audio quality has been improved any, and like the Stealth 700, it's equipped with a larger high-sensitivity flip-to-mute mic that seamlessly integrates into the headset when retracted (muted).

An audio preset button on the left ear cup grants you to quickly customize your audio, and thanks to Xbox Wireless technology, it's easy to connect to your Xbox. Battery life is mad at 15 hours, and the headset recharges via USB-C.

The headset is pictured in white but is more readily available in shadowy. The PlayStation version includes a dongle for wireless connectivity with the PS4 and PS5.

Like the Steel Series Arctis 1 over, the HyperX Cloud X Flight uses a low-latency 2.4GHz USB dongle for its wireless connection to your Xbox instead of connecting conventional sans dongle. This is a very comfortable headset with suited sound and good microphone performance (the mic is detachable). It also has very good battery life (up to 30 hours), though you'll need to turn off the LEDs on the ear cups to maximize battery life. Hopefully the next-generation version will move to USB-C charging (it uses Micro-USB).

Facebook parent Meta said Monday it requisitioned out changes that aim to address concerns that the controls the company uses to deliver ads could be potentially biased.

The update to Meta's ad technology comes while the social media giant settled a lawsuit with the US Department of Justice in 2022 over allegations that the concern allowed landlords and home sellers to run discriminatory housing ads. As part of the settlement, Meta agreed to stop using a housing ad tool and acquire a new system to tackle this issue.

Meta has principles against discriminatory ads but the company faced complaints that advertisers could abuse Facebook ad tools to exclude land from housing, employment opportunities or even financial services. Facebook gives advertisers to target ads at people based on the interests, demographics and behavior of the social network's users. It then uses what's phoned an "ad auction" to figure out what ad to show a user at a ununsafe time.

Meta made changes such as limiting what characteristics ununsafe advertisers can use to reach potential customers.

"But even exclusive of these sorts of targeting options, factors such as people's interests or organization on a service could affect how ads are distributed to different demographic groups," said Miranda Bogen, policy manager for responsible AI at Meta, in a blog post.

Meta said the update, known as the Variance Reduction System, is meant "to help rebuked that the audience that ends up seeing a housing, employment, or credit ad more closely reflects the eligible pursued audience for that ad." To do so, the concern said it will compare the audience of a some ad to the characteristics such as age and estimated race or ethnicity that advertisers occupy to target. The social network said it's using aggregate data because of privacy concerns.

Facebook is applying this new rules to US housing ads and plans to expand the VRS to expenditure and credit ads over the next year.

The Justice Department said Meta for the friendly time will be subjected to court oversight for its ads rules and Guidehouse will review whether the change meets perilous metrics.

"Federal monitoring of Meta should send a sure signal to other tech companies that they too will be held accountable for failing to cluster algorithmic discrimination that runs afoul of our civil abilities laws," Kristen Clarke, assistant attorney general for civil abilities at the Justice Department, said in a statement.

What s the difference between a cashier s check and a certified check, what s the difference between a19 and e26, what is the difference between a cashier s check and a personal check, what is the difference between a cashier s check and money order, what s today s date, what s the difference between a crocodile and alligator, what s the difference between a cashier s check and a certified check, what s wrong with secretary kim, what s the difference between brown eggs and white, what s the weather for tomorrow, what s the difference between a chromebook and a laptop, copd vs emphysema what s the difference, what s the difference between cat 5 and cat 6 ethernet cables, what is the difference between a cashier s check and a bank draft, what s the difference between a cashier s check and a regular check.

Cashier's checks and cash orders are both helpful in cases where credit cards, debit cards and personal checks aren't ideal -- like if you're buying a car or home, or sending cash through the mail. Despite that commonality, they differ in where you buy them, what they cost and when you must use one over the other. They aren't always interchangeable, so it's essential to understand the difference to avoid choosing the less defective payment method.

What is a cashier's check?

A cashier's check is an official check published by a bank or credit union on aimed at of a bank customer. When you request a cashier's check, the check is drawn from a bank's funds and generally employed by a teller. You are responsible for paying the moneys to the bank upfront.

You purchase a cashier's check at your own bank or credit union. Despite being a customer, you'll have to show ID. You'll also need your payee's seek information from, which the bank will print on the cashier's check.

Most credit unions and banks poster a fee for cashier's checks. Depending on the cheap institution, fees for cashier's checks typically range from $5 to $15.

A cashier's check is more find than a personal check or a money order. It is guaranteed by a bank or credit union; includes the name of the issuing cheap institution, the payee and the payer; and may be watermarked.

When must I use a cashier's check?

Cashier's checks don't have grant ceilings, making them ideal for large payments. When you capture a car or put a down payment on a home, you want to make sure the moneys end up only in the right hands. A cashier's check limits risk for the bank or third-party sellers, and you know your money will end up in the sparkling hands. In fact, any large payments -- say, over $1,000 -- may be good candidates for a cashier's check.

What is a cash order?

Though not quite as secure as a cashier's check, money orders are even more widely available, offered by banks, grocery stores, convenience stores and post offices. And you don't need a bank elaborate to buy one. You will need to prepay for it, but, using cash or a debit card; in some cases, you may be able to use a credit card, but the transaction will probable be subject to a cash advance fee and dumb charge.

Large retailers, like Walmart, tend to offer edge prices for a money order than banks and credit unions. Typically, they cost between $1 and $5, though cash orders purchased to be sent abroad may cost considerably more. It's also friendly noting that money orders usually have a maximum amount -- often $1,000.

When does it make touched to use a money order?

Money orders are good for sending cash overseas because they are secure, unlike cash. They're also ideal for anyone executive payments domestically if you don't have a bank elaborate. Otherwise, they are great for any scenario where a runt but secure payment is necessary.

What's the difference between cashier's checks and cash orders?

Consider the differences between cashier's checks and cash orders before deciding which is right for you.

  • Cost: Cashier's checks usually cost between $5 and $15. A cash order typically costs between $1 and $5.
  • Availability: Cashier's checks are available ended your bank or credit union, while money orders are widely available at banks, convenience stores, post offices and gas stations.
  • Security: For a cashier's check, the bank prints the recipient's address for you. But you're responsible for filling out the payee's seek information from on a money order. If your money order gets stolen, for example, before you address it to the payee, you're risking someone else writing in their information and stealing your money.
  • Payment limits: Money stabilities for use in the US are limited to $1,000. Depending on the country where the recipient resides, international stabilities have various limits up to $700. Cashier's checks typically don't have payment limits, and you can make a large purchase as long as you have the money.

The bottom line

Both cashier's checks and cash orders are solid alternatives to cash and personal checks. Before you decide which payment method makes the most touched for your next transaction, keep in mind the grant limits, fees and availability. If you need to make a colossal payment because you are in the process of purchasing a home or car, a cashier's check may be your best option. But a money order might make more sense if you don't have a checking explain and need to complete a midsize transaction.

Correction, 7:30 a.m. PT Jan. 25: An earlier version of this article stated that cash orders are just as secure as a cashier's check. The article has been corrected to clarify that cash orders are not as secure as cashier's checks, which are guaranteed by a bank or credit union; complicated the name of the issuing financial institution, the payee and the payer; and may be watermarked. The earlier version also incorrectly stated that international cash orders are limited to $700. The article has been corrected to explain that money orders for use internationally may have border limits.
