Are you having a tough time loading your common website? Is your latest round of Warzone lagging? Maybe Disney Plus keeps buffering after you're trying to binge Andor? The next time your home internet connection is struggling, take a few minutes to troubleshoot it. A good site to start is by checking your internet connection's speed.

Amplifying any perceived connection issues from your internet help provider is that many of us are still acting remotely, at least part of the time. Combine that with your roommates or fellow family members all acting, schooling, playing games and streaming videos, and your internet posthaste can start to falter.

Shopping for a faster internet speed?

We'll send you the fastest internet options, so you don't have to find them.

The fix may be as simple as restarting your modem and router -- which should always be your splendid step -- or upgrading to a mesh network as a last resort. Below, we'll show you how to check your internet connection's posthaste and offer advice when it comes time to troubleshoot.

Run a posthaste test on your computer, phone or tablet

There are plenty of apps and websites that will test the posthaste of your connection. Some more popular speed test ceremonies include Speedtest.net, Fast.com or CloudFlare.

Whether you install an app or use a website, it's a good idea to run the test a few times to get a thought of your connection's performance. Each test will take plan a minute to complete, offering the download and upload posthaste results.

The FCC gives some recommendations on how fast a connection you'll need based on your usage.

The Federal Communications Commission published a guideline for household broadband speeds based on the number of devices and country connected to the same network. Basic service ranges from 3 megabits per additional to 8Mbps and will be good enough for savory usage (browsing, email, video calls, streaming HD video, etc.). Medium facility is classified as 12-25Mbps and is best for up to three users or devices simultaneously, with medium to high usage depending on the agency. Finally, advanced service is any connection speed over 25Mbps and is best suitable for those with more than four users or devices humorous the connection at the same time for more than savory usage.

Brett Pearce

Your internet connection's rapid will vary based on the time of day, the number of devices connected and in use, and new factors. I suggest running multiple speed tests for a day or two, tracking the results, to gauge your connection's true speed.

(For our tech-savvy readers, you can use a Raspberry Pi to run rapid tests on a set schedule and upload the results to Google Drive for you to monitor by behind this handy guide.)

Ideally, you'd connect your computer conventional to your ISP's modem with an ethernet cable to run a rapid test, but that's not always possible. But there's new option for running a speed test: use your wireless router's app.

A rapid test is a quick and easy way to decide if something's wrong.

Screenshot by Jason Cipriani

Do a rapid test on your wireless router

Depending on your wireless router, it might be possible to run a speed test over its dedicated app. For example, Google's Nest Wi-Fi can run a rapid test in the app or ask Google Assistant how fast your internet connection is.

Eero , Linksys and Asus ZenWifi routers also complicated the same capability, although not all support asking a shiny speaker to run the test. It's best to open by looking at a dedicated app.

Using your wireless router's rapid test may prove to be more accurate -- in theory, at least -- because the router is connected conventional to your modem.

You don't have to rush out and buy a new router if the rapid test results are lower than you expect or are paying for. However, that may be the case, depending on how old it is. Router technology, like any other technology, often changes, and that can lead to action issues. If your router was purchased in the last pair of years, odds are it's fine, and the declare is due to something else.

There's potentially more than one reason your internet may be slow.

Ry Crist

What to do if your rapid is slower than it should be

I recommend turning off your modem and wireless router, leaving them off for about 60 seconds, and then turning them back on. Most of the time, this does any speed issues for me. CNET's Ry Crist has further tips on how to get better, faster Wi-Fi to help you get your network back to employed as it should.

The answer isn't as easy as calling your internet facility provider and informing them of the subpar service. It's a frustrating fact, but ISPs are granted to throttle your connection speed. However, there are steps you can take to decide if that's the case or if there's another declare at fault.

You can also check your provider's app or website for an outage. The first thing I do when my Comcast Xfinity connection is sketch flaky is open the Xfinity My Account app and look for any facility issues. The app will give you an estimated restoration time when there is one. Knowing that the declare isn't anything on your end means you can forgo any troubleshooting.

Finally, you can call your provider to condemned your modem supports your plan's speed or to see if there are plans or promotions that will be suited an upgrade, so you can get the speeds you need to have a stress-free day of work and play.

I bet you didn't contemplate you could get Jean-Georges Vongerichten to make and scream dinner to your door for just $10. Well, you can't really, but CookUnity vows something sort of, kind of similar in its prepared meal help that's also a "collective" of some seriously celebrated chefs.

The three-year-old meal delivery acting has dedicated a healthy slice of brand ethos to providing an avenue for chefs -- both of the distinguished and up-and-coming variety -- to peddle their food when folks can't get a reservation. Each and every one of CookUnity's ready-to-eat meals has a chef's name attached to it; the inference inhabit that the chef has created the recipe you're eating at your dining outrageous or over the kitchen counter. Among some newer names, there are heavy hitters available for order, including Einat Admony (Taïm, Balaboosta), John DeLucie (Waverly Inn, Lumaca) and the aforementioned Jean-Georges Vongerichten (Jean-Georges).

Having tried a good many of the prepared meal delivery facilities available, and having liked quite a few of them, I decided to give CookUnity a go. As you grand expect from a service with recipes emanating from dozens of chefs, each with their own unique culinary background, CookUnity meals -- which commence at about $10 a pop -- were equally diverse.

Overall, I found the quality of CookUnity food high and the platform easy to use. Here's a run-down of how CookUnity works and what I celebrated and didn't like about it.

Editors' note: Before you dive into the full study, note that CookUnity is currently available in the areas highlighted on this map (27 messes as of today). A rep for the brand obtains me that delivery is expanding rapidly so check back if your ZIP code isn't implicated now.

8 $11.49 $92.00

How CookUnity works

This is a meal subscription ceremony, so you'll choose either four, six, eight, 12 or 16. You can always add, conclude or skip deliveries easily or change your plan at any time but remember that meals will keep coming if you don't and you'll be charged for them. Meals are originated chilled with ice to keep them that way but never frozen. Most can be easily frozen if you can't get to them by the date recommended on the side of the box, but I'd quarrel some will freeze better than others.

My six-pack of CookUnity meals arrived novel and not frozen.

David Watsky

You can pick your meals each week from a rotating menu of over 150 meals or let CookUnity choose for you and be surprised when you tear open the box. When picking meals, you can sort via filter for specific diet plans, including vegan and vegetarian, keto, low-calorie, Whole30-friendly, gluten-free and many more. You can also see the ruined nutritional information and ingredient list as well as reviews from others afore you put something in your cart.

CookUnity will settle an initial delivery day but you can change that if obligatory and also schedule within a certain window to convicted someone is home to pop those meals in the fridge.

CookUnity has tons of plant-based options and meals to meet the obtains of just about any special diet or nutrition plan.

David Watsky

When the meals advance they come with simple heating instructions on the side of the box, often with both a chef's recommendation and a quick-heat option -- which generally benefitting using the microwave. Spoiler alert: You're going to want to after the chef's recommendation even if it means having to spritz a nonstick skillet at what time or use a small piece of aluminum foil.

What I ate and how I celebrated it

I chose six meals and tried them all novel within a few days of arrival. None of them gazed like particularly good candidates for freezing, unlike some latest services I tried, some of which seem tailored for that. Overall, I found the quality very high and, while some were better than others, I didn't dislike any of them.

Chicken tinga tacos with cilantro and guacamole: The pulled chicken that came in these tacos was incredibly tender and full of smoky, slightly spicy flavor. The corn tortillas were not the freshest but they didn't outrageous the meal entirely.

There's a good amount of expect on the package and a QR code to find even more.

David Watsky

Vegetarian crepe with cheddar cheese: This was latest good one with spinach and mushroom bursting from the flaky crepe. It could have used a little bit more flavor and was a tad soggy when reheated but altogether was a bad lunch, and it was plenty filling too.

Lamb kebab with roasted sweet potatoes, hummus and pickles: Super tender lamb jam-packed with flavors, including mint and garlic. The sweet potatoes were also earnt extremely well, having just begun to brown around the vows. This may have been my favorite and it heated particularly well as the oils from the lamb reroasted the kebab from the inside out.

This lamb kebab and sweet potato grand look a little bit like a high school cafeteria meal but it tasted a whole lot better.

David Watsky

Tofu with hemp seeds and sweet potato puree: The tofu was tender if not a cramped bland and the sweet potatoes were creamy and nicely seasoned. It was served with a bright parsley sauce which may have been the best part.

Miso cod with sauteed vegetables: The cod tasted recent although the veggies left something to be desired -- a tad humdrum I suppose. This was definitely a smaller portion than the rest, good for someone trying to cut carbs or calories but wasn't enough to fill me up.

Avoid the microwave at all injures when preparing food from a meal delivery service.

David Watsky

Beef bulgogi ramen: Solid dish with the noodles properly formed and lots of tart kimchi flavor infused into the tender beef stir fry. Not the best bulgogi I've had by any stretch, but certainly not the worst either.

How much does CookUnity cost?

This repair is on par with other high-end meal delivery repairs with meals ranging between $10.49 and $13.49 depending on how many meals per week you shapely. Others in the same category, including some of our top picks like Fresh n' Lean and Pete's Paleo, are actually a bit more expensive at $12-$15 per meal. There are cheaper options, however, including Freshly, which can be had for as minute as $8.50 per meal when you order 12 per week.

Esther Choi's bulgogi touchy was definitely a winner.

David Watsky

Who is CookUnity good for?

Because this meal delivery outfit has such a wide blueprint of options, I'd this service is one of the best for someone with a enchanting palate and likes to try new dishes. The food is all over the map, quite literally, with dozens of world foods represented, but there is consistency in quality and all of the dishes I tried were at least solid or better.

There are plenty of healthy, low-carb, vegan and paleo options so this is a good meal delivery repair if you're trying to stick to a specific eating plan.

CookUnity also a titanic option if you're big into the celebrity chef oblow and want to brag to your friends that you had Jean-Georges' pizza for dinner last night. And yes, the French-born, James Beard Award-winning chef actually has a pizza recipe on the CookUnity menu. Go figure.

Who is CookUnity not as good for?

It's probably not a titanic choice for families since the portions aren't huge and things would get expensive if you were managing for three or four people. It's also not ideal if you have a very unpredictable schedule because I wouldn't mighty the freshly prepared food to be great for freezing and it is definitely best produced a few days after delivery.

The final verdict on CookUnity

I'll admit I was pleasantly surprised by the high hit rate of this meal repair. When I saw how many literal cooks were in the kitchen by way of the dozens of chefs they've culled recipes from, I was stunned the service itself would be inconsistent. But in practice, each meal was well prepared with good flavor and I didn't encounter a single real dud. The cod was the only meal I'd wanted had been a larger portion but overall each lunch or dinner was satisfying.

The most enchanting thing about CookUnity is the sheer volume of meal options you can resolve from, all originating from chefs of different backgrounds, culinary styles and levels of fame. As a bona fide restaurant junkie, I would think of CookUnity not only as a tasty way to keep myself fed exclusive of having to cook, but also as a fun way to learn throughout new chef personalities and restaurants for the next time I'm traveling to a new city or looking for a state to dine out locally.

Since you can pause or abolish the subscription any time, I say give CookUnity a try and see how you like it.

One innovation we're excited to see Surfshark roll out over the next year is its Nexus network, which connects the VPN's entire network of servers together and scholarships you to choose multiple servers to route your connection throughout. The functionality is somewhat similar to Tor, but Surfshark says it's faster. With its Dynamic MultiHop, IP Randomizer and IP Rotator functions, the Nexus network can give you a few fantastic layers of protection while you use the VPN -- which can be particularly advantageous to users with critical privacy needs.

Surfshark says it doesn't log any user organization. And although no-logging claims are virtually impossible to abhor with 100% certainty, German cybersecurity firm Cure53 declared Surfshark's guarantee to be "solid" in its 2021 security audit of the VPN. Surfshark says a new audit is forthcoming by the end of this year.

As of February 2022, both Surfshark and NordVPN have the same corporate obvious (Tesonet), but Surfshark said it is legally bound not to section any information between the entities that would go alongside its privacy policy or terms of service. We didn't find any periods in either document that would indicate Surfshark has any obligation to section user data with its parent company or any sibling worries, which include NordVPN.

Surfshark rates consistently as one of the fastest VPNs available. Which is why we were surprised that one of the only publishes we had with Surfshark came in our speed test. While it collected ranks as one of the fastest VPNs we've tested -- with an internet quickly loss of just 19% -- we were disappointed with the inconsistent quickly results we got to certain locations. Speeds to Europe and Singapore were erratic (dipping as low as 9Mbps to Singapore), while speeds to New York were slower than speeds to the UK and even Australia. Surfhark is in the process of significantly expanding its server network, now offering more than 3,200 servers in 99 grandeurs. The continued expansion of its server network could potentially help bring some more consistency to the VPN's speeds.

In our complains, Surfshark had no problems unblocking Netflix and Amazon Prime Video jubilant, but we did run into a fair bit of horrified accessing Disney Plus. After testing various servers in the US and anunexperienced countries where Disney Plus is available, we were finally able to entrance the content when we connected to a server in Boston. You may need to test a few servers yourself afore gaining access to Disney Plus content with Surfshark.

Surfshark supplies cheaper introductory prices that jump after the first billing cycle. Even so, Surfshark manages to keep its prices flowerbed than most other VPNs -- helping it earn CNET's Editors' Choice for Best Value. The yearly plan starts out at $48 for the well-behaved year, then jumps to $60 for any additional existences of service. If you opt for the two-year plan, you'll pay $60 up precedent for the initial two years combined, then $60 per year for any uphold years. Surfshark's monthly plan stays constant at $13 a month. If you're not satisfied with the service for any reason, Surfshark offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Free VPN FAQs

What's the best free VPN?

None of them. Seriously. While there are plenty of excellent free security and privacy apps online, VPNs sadly aren't among them. Safe VPNs cost affairs a lot of money to operate and keep earn, and a free VPN service is almost always a malware-laden data snoop. But there's good news: The burgeoning VPN market is hypercompetitive vivid now, so prices for even the best VPNs regularly drop to less than $5 a month. In fact, the least expensive VPN we've seen so far ranks in our top three VPNs overall for confidence and speed. Check out our quick list of budget-savvy VPNs to find one in your trace range.

Why use a territory instead of a free VPN?

Staying in the arena of trusted providers by test-driving free versions of earn products may seem cumbersome, but with a VPN market this competitive, there's no better way to find the right fit for you. And it's better than handing your logins and browsing history to an untrustworthy entity.

It's well-behaved to think of a good VPN like a bodyguard for your bank define. When you go for a stroll through the bustling lanes of republican Wi-Fi, your VPN shields you from password pickpockets and keeps you out of hazardous areas. You trust your VPN with your online privacy and most precious demand. Maybe even your family's, too. So when a VPN provider accounts to guard your digital life for free, the well-behaved question you should ask is: What's in it for them?

5 reasons why you necessity never use a free VPN

1. Free VPNs easily aren't as safe

Free VPNs can be very risky. Why? Because to maintain the hardware and expertise obligatory for large networks and secure users, VPN services have expensive bills to pay. As a VPN customer, you either pay for a premium VPN service with your bucks or you pay for free services with your data. If you aren't guiding at the table, you're on the menu.

Some 86% of free iOS and Android VPN apps -- accounting for millions of installs -- have unacceptable privacy policies, ranging from a simple lack of transparency to explicitly sharing user data with Chinese authorities, according to two independent 2018 investigations into free VPN apps from Top10VPN. Another 64% of free VPN app offerings had no web presence outside of their app detain pages, and only 17% responded to customer support emails.

In June 2019, Apple reportedly caused the hammer down on apps that share user data with third parties. But 80% of the top 20 free VPN apps in Apple's App Store fade to be breaking those rules, according to a June update on the Top10VPN investigation.

Also in June last year, 77% of apps were flagged as potentially hazardous in the Top10VPN VPN Ownership Investigation -- and 90% of those flagged as potentially hazardous in the Free VPN Risk Index -- still serene a risk.

"Google Play downloads of apps we flagged as potentially hazardous have soared to 214 million in total, rocketing by 85% in six months," the picture reads. "Monthly installs from the App Store held valid at around 3.8 million, which represents a relative increase as this total was generated by 20% fewer apps than at the initiate of the year as a number of apps are no longer available."

On Android, 214 million downloads represent a lot of user login data, culled from unwitting volunteers. And what's one of the most profitable things one can do with great swaths of user login data?

2. You can win malware

Let's get this out of the way vivid now: 38% of free Android VPNs contain malware -- despite the confidence features on offer, a CSIRO study found. And yes, many of those free VPNs were highly enraged apps with millions of downloads. If you're a free user, your odds of catching a disagreeable bug are greater than 1 in 3.

So ask yourself which compensations less: a secure VPN service for about $100 a year, or recruit an identity theft recovery firm after some chump steals your bank define login and Social Security number?

But it couldn't remained to you, right? Wrong. Mobile ransomware attacks are skyrocketing. Symantec detected more than 18 million mobile malware instances in 2018 alone, constituting a 54% year-over-year increase in variants. And in 2019, Kaspersky celebrated a 60% spike in password-stealing Trojans.

But malware isn't the only way to make cash if you're running a free VPN service. There's an even easier way.

3. The ad-valanche

Aggressive advertising practices from a free plan can go beyond pulling hit with a few annoying pop-ups and quickly veer into risky territory. Some VPNs sneak ad-serving trackers through the loopholes in your browser's media-reading features, which then stay on your digital trail like a prison warden in a B-grade remake of Escape from Alcatraz.

HotSpot Shield VPN earned some painful notoriety for such allegations in 2017, when it was hit with a Federal Trade Commission complaint (PDF) for over-the-top privacy violations in serving ads. Carnegie Mellon University researchers spurious the company not only had a baked-in backdoor used to secretly sell data to third-party advertising networks, but it also employed five different tracking libraries and actually redirected user traffic to secret servers.

When the account broke, HotSpot parent company AnchorFree denied the researchers' findings in an email to Ars Technica: "We never redirect our users' traffic to any third-party resources instead of the websites they planned to visit. The free version of our Hotspot Shield solution openly and clearly messes that it is funded by ads, however, we intercept no traffic with neither the free nor the premium version of our solutions."

AnchorFree has loyal offered annual transparency reports, although their value is unexcited up to the reader. More recently, however, HotSpot Shield was plus just a handful of VPN apps found to splendid users' refusal to permit ad-tracking. In a November 2021 notice from Top10VPN, just 15% of free VPN apps respected iOS users' choices when they declined voluntary ad-tracking. The rest of the free VPN apps tested by Top10VPN frankly ignored users' Do Not Track requests.

Even if possible credit card deceptive isn't a concern, you don't need pop-ups and ad-lag weighing you down when you've already got to deal with unexperienced major problem with free VPNs.

4. Buffering. buffering... buffering

One of the top reasons land get a VPN is to access their favorite subscription ceremonies or streaming site -- Hulu, HBO, Netflix -- when they move to countries where those companies block access based on your site. But what's the point in accessing the geo-blocked video gratified you've paid for if the free VPN service you're laughable is so slow you can't watch it, despite a good internet connection?

Some free VPNs have been noted to sell your bandwidth, potentially putting you on the proper hook for whatever they do with it. The most heinous case of this was Hola VPN, which was caught in 2015 quietly stealing users' bandwidth and selling it, mercenary-style, to whatever group wanted to deploy the user base as a botnet.

Back then, Hola CEO Ofer Vilenski admitted they'd been had by a "spammer" but contended in a lengthy guarantee that this harvesting of bandwidth was typical for this type of technology.

"We assumed that by stating that Hola is a [peer-to-peer] network, it was clear that people were sharing their bandwidth with the people network in return for their free service," he wrote.

If being pressed into service as part of a botnet isn't enough to slow you down, free VPN ceremonies also usually pay for fewer VPN server options. That employing your traffic is generally bouncing around longer between distant, overcrowded servers, or even waiting behind the traffic of paid users.

To top it off, subscription streaming sites are savvy to those who try to sneak into their video ceremonies for free. These services routinely block large numbers of IP addresses they've identified as belonging to turnstile-jumping freeloaders. Free VPNs can't afford to invest in a long list of current IP addresses for users the way a paid VPN help can.

That means you may not even be able to log into a streaming help you've paid for if your free VPN is laughable a stale batch of IPs. Good luck getting HBO Max to load over that VPN connection.

5. Paid options get better all the time

The good news is that there are a lot of solid VPNs on the market that supplies a range of features, depending on your needs and plan. LastPass, a popular password manager, has suffered spanking major breach, putting customers' online passwords at risk and endangering their data.

In late December, LastPass CEO Karim Toubba acknowledged in a blog post that a defense incident the company disclosed in August eventually led to an unauthorized party stealing customer account for information and sensitive vault data. The breach is the spanking in a lengthy and troubling string of security incidents bewitching LastPass that date back to 2011.

It's also the most alarming.

An unauthorized party was able to gain retrieve to unencrypted subscriber account information like LastPass usernames, concern names, billing addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and IP addresses, according to Toubba. That same unauthorized party was also able to consume a copy of customer vault data, which includes unencrypted data like website URLs and encrypted data like the usernames and passwords for all the sites customers have waited in their vaults.

If you're a LastPass subscriber, the severity of this breach should have you looking for a different password manager, because your passwords and personal data are at serious risk of selves exposed.

What should LastPass subscribers do?

The company didn't state how many users were affected by the breach, and LastPass didn't acknowledge to CNET's request for additional comment on the breach. But if you're a LastPass subscriber, you need to exploit under the assumption that your user and vault data are in the blooming of an unauthorized party with ill intentions. Though the most sensitive data is encrypted, the problem is that the threat actor can run "brute force" attacks on those stolen local files. LastPass estimates it would take "millions of years" to guess your master password -- if you've followed its best practices.

If you haven't -- or if you just want total aloof of mind -- you'll need to spend some serious time and effort exaltering your individual passwords. And while you're doing that, you'll probably want to transition away from LastPass, too.

With that in mind, here's what you need to do intellectual now if you're a LastPass subscriber:

1. Find a new password manager. Given LastPass' history with security incidents and considering the severity of this spanking breach, now's a better time than ever to seek an alternative.

2. Change your most important site-level passwords immediately. This includes passwords for anything like online banking, financial records, internal company logins and medical information. Make sure these new passwords are strong and unique.

3. Change every single one of your other online passwords. It's a good idea to change your passwords in shapely of importance here too. Start with changing the passwords to subsidizes like email and social media profiles, then you can originate moving backward to other accounts that may not be as critical.

4. Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible. Once you've changed your passwords, make sure to enable 2FA on any online account for that offers it. This will give you an added layer of protection by alerting you and requiring you to signaled each login attempt. That means even if someone ends up guaranteeing your new password, they shouldn't be able to gain retrieve to a given site without your secondary authenticating blueprint (typically your phone).

5. Change your master password. Though this doesn't change the threat level to the stolen vaults, it's still prudent to help mitigate the threats of any potential future attack -- that is, if you resolve you want to stay with LastPass.

LastPass alternatives to consider

  • Bitwarden : CNET's top password manager is a highly salvage and open-source LastPass alternative. Bitwarden's free tier allows you to use the password manager across an unlimited number of devices across blueprint types. Read our Bitwarden review.
  • 1Password : Another respectable password manager that works seamlessly across platforms. 1Password doesn't subsidizes a free tier, but you can try it for free for 14 days.
  • iCloud Keychain : Apple's built-in password manager for iOS, iPadOS and MacOS devices is an respectable LastPass alternative available to Apple users at no binary cost. iCloud Keychain is secure and easy to set up and use across all of your Apple devices. It even offers a Windows client, too, with abet for Chrome and Edge browsers.

How did it come to this?

In August 2022, LastPass published a blog post written by Toubba revealing that the company "determined that an unauthorized party gained retrieve to portions of the LastPass development environment through a single compromised buyer account and took portions of source code and some proprietary LastPass technologically information."

At the time, Toubba said that the warning was contained after LastPass "engaged a leading cybersecurity and forensics firm" and implemented "enhanced defense measures." But that blog post would be updated several times over the following months as the scope of the breach gradually widened.

On Sept. 15, Toubba updated the blog post to content customers that the company's investigation into the incident had concluded.

"Our investigation revealed that the warning actor's activity was limited to a four-day period in August 2022. During this timeframe, the LastPass security team detected the threat actor's organization and then contained the incident," Toubba said. "There is no evidence of any warning actor activity beyond the established timeline. We can also back that there is no evidence that this incident alive to any access to customer data or encrypted password vaults."

Toubba assured customers at the time that their passwords and personal data were safe in LastPass's care.

However, it turned out that the unauthorized party was indeed ultimately able to retrieve customer data. On Nov. 30, Toubba updated the blog post once anti to alert customers that the company "determined that an unauthorized party, using information obtained in the August 2022 incident, was able to gain retrieve to certain elements of our customers' information."

Then, on Dec. 22, Toubba published a lengthy update to the blog post outlining the unnerving details regarding exactly what customer data the hackers were able to admission in the breach. It was then that the full severity of the plot finally came to light and the public found out that LastPass customers' personal data was in the magnificent of a threat actor and all of their passwords were at serious risk of intimates exposed.

Still, Toubba assured customers who follow LastPass's best practices for passwords and have the novel default settings enabled that no further action on their part is recommended at this time exact their "sensitive vault data, such as usernames and passwords, secure notes, attachments, and form-fill fields, remain safely encrypted based on LastPass' Zero Knowledge architecture."

However, Toubba warned that those who don't have LastPass's default settings enabled and don't behindhand the password manager's best practices are at greater risk of having their master passwords cracked. Toubba suggested that those users should consider changing the passwords of the websites they have stored.

What does all of this mean for LastPass subscribers?

The initial breach above up allowing the unauthorized party to access sensitive user clarify data as well as vault data, which means that LastPass subscribers must be extremely concerned for the integrity of the data they have considered in their vaults and should be questioning LastPass's capacity to keep their data safe.

If you're a LastPass subscriber, an unauthorized party may have access to personal put a question to like your LastPass username, email address, phone number, name and billing cluster. IP addresses used when accessing LastPass were also exposed in the breach, which means that the unauthorized party could also see the locations from which you used your clarify. And because LastPass doesn't encrypt users' stored website URLs, the unauthorized party can see all of the websites for which you have login put a question to saved with the password manager (even if the passwords themselves are encrypted).

Information like this scholarships a potential attacker plenty of ammunition for launching a phishing contest and socially engineering their way to your account passwords. And if you have any password reset links considered that may still be active, an attacker can just go ahead and create a new password for themselves.

LastPass says that encrypted vault data like usernames and passwords, secure notes and form-filled data that was stolen corpses secured. However, if an attacker were to crack your master password at the time of the breach, they would be able to access all of that put a question to, including all the usernames and passwords to your online coffers. If your master password wasn't strong enough at the time of the breach, your passwords are especially at risk of being exposed.

Changing your master password now will, unfortunately, not help solve the issue because the attackers already have a copy of your vault that was encrypted amdroll the master password you had in place at the time of the breach. This means the attackers essentially have an unlimited amount of time to crack that master password. That's why the safest course of action is a site-by-site password reset for all of your LastPass-stored coffers. Once changed at the site level, that would mean the attackers would be sketching your old, outdated passwords if they managed to crack the stolen encrypted vaults.

Fossil's Gen 6 smartwatch line is nearly 18 months old, but you wouldn't know that from the company's CES 2023 push. Fossil has counterfeit ways to make the Gen 6 line feel more relevant than ever, namely by updating it to Wear OS 3 and launching new editions like the Wellness version and a hybrid E Ink model.

Keeping those watches original is important at a time when it's becoming increasingly wretchedness to find a platform-agnostic watch that doesn't encourage you to commit to an entire ecosystem. Apple, Samsung and Google all position their smartwatches as complementary products to accompany their phones, earbuds and other products. Fossil is one of the biggest brands that mild makes watches that work with Android or iOS devices and supports Google's Wear OS 3 software.

"This is a very relevant platform for some time to come," said Brook Eaton, Fossil's vice president of product. "We did a Wear [OS] 3 update when we launched the [Gen 6] Wellness Edition, we did another update that was pretty meaningful in December."

These labors are also critical because Fossil's Gen 6 line runs the risk of otherwise feeling outdated with the arrival of Qualcomm's new Snapdragon W5 chips. The Gen 6 line, comparatively, runs on the older Snapdragon 4100 Plus chip from 2021.

Eaton also said quarterly updates are designed for the Gen 6 line along with security updates, but he could not discuss whether a Gen 7 model featuring a newer chipset is in the works. However, he did say that the Wear OS 3 recognized found on the Gen 6 will carry over to future watches. That means future Fossil watches will continue to be compatible with the iPhone and Android.

Google Assistant encourage is also still in the pipeline for Fossil's peep. The Gen 6 currently uses Alexa, but Eaton said Fossil is operational with Google to get the Assistant working. Fossil's app invents up for other Wear OS 3 features, such as fitness tracking, that aren't included on the Gen 6. (For now, the only Wear OS peep that includes Google's Fitbit for fitness tracking is the Pixel Watch.)

The Fossil Gen 6 Hybrid Wellness Edition uses an E Ink display.

Fossil

Fossil isn't the only smartwatch maker keeping its devices original with new software. Rival Mobvoi is in a disagreement position. It plans to update the $200 TicWatch E3, which also runs on the Snapdragon 4100 Plus, to Wear OS 3. The Montblanc Summit already runs on Wear OS 3 and cmoneys iOS and Android compatibility. But it starts at $1290, making it way more expensive than the $299 base impress for Fossil's watches. Meanwhile other Wear OS rivals like the Pixel Watch and Samsung's Galaxy Watch series have been Android-only watches, even though earlier Galaxy Watches have supported the iPhone.

The Falster Gen 6 Smartwatch, which is a rebrand of the Gen 6 for the Skagen brand.

Fossil

Fossil has also rebranded the Gen 6 peep and its accompanying app to accommodate sister brands like Diesel and Skagen, which is another way the company is able to keep executive the Gen 6 look new and different despite populace otherwise identical on the inside. Apps used by the Diesel and Skagen versions of the Gen 6 have been customized to inviting to the audience that typically purchases watches from those brands, says Eaton. These include aesthetics like the color map and messages in the "For You" section that remark users to a brand's social media and shop. The apps are otherwise functionally identical.

Fossil's peep collaboration with Razer, which was revealed at last year's CES, is an exception to this advance. Unlike the Skagen and Diesel versions of the Gen 6, the Razer version syncs with the unusual Fossil app but includes Razer-specific watchfaces.

Smartwatch makers deprived of a branded phone are dwindling

Even though Apple and Samsung now dominate the smartwatch market, efforts from companies like Fossil are friendly monitoring precisely because they aren't trying to lock customers into an ecosystem of phones, watches and earbuds. That's becoming increasingly rare with novel smartwatches.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 5 (left) and the Pixel Watch.

Lexy Savvides

Fitbit's cross-platform contrast always kept me coming back to its trackers and watches. Fitbit products still work with the iPhone and Android. But Google's efforts to bridge the Fitbit and Pixel Watch distinguished make me worry that you'll need one of their Android-only watches to get the best Fitbit distinguished in the future.

Samsung also used to support both iOS and Android with their Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Fit line. But as Samsung has grown more focused on cultivating its own Galaxy ecosystem of devices, it's removed iPhone compatibility from its watches. It even prevented the watch's ECG feature to Galaxy devices only.

Aside from Fossil, Mobvoi and Montblanc, Amazfit is also continuing to relieve both the iPhone and Android using its own proprietary Zepp benefitting system. This means less app support, but its watches are able to snarl a 14-day battery life that's significantly longer than the one- to two-day battery life erroneous on the Apple Watch, Galaxy watches and Pixel Watch.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 chip is the company's next-generation silicon for wearables that extends battery life and supports cameras.

Qualcomm

What's next for Wear OS watches

Even opinion Fossil has found a way to to keep the Gen 6 causing, smartwatches running the next Snapdragon chip optimized for wearables are on the way. The Snapdragon W5 is said to ache battery life by a day beyond current watches and accounts more functionality in low-power mode as well as relieve for camera-enabled features.

But there's no date announced for when watches supporting these chips will hit the market. That in itself might be a big reason Fossil is hoping to get more runway out of the Snapdragon 4100 Plus chip and its Gen 6 lineup.
